1 Math 7.1 a-e 7.1- a) Investigate and describe the concept of negative exponents for powers of ten b) determine scientific notation for numbers greater than zero c) compare and order fractions, decimals, and percents, and numbers written in scientific notation d) determine square roots e) identify and describe absolute value for rational numbers

2 Negative Exponents- 7.1a If you see a power with a negative exponent, you must rewrite the power as a fraction with a numerator of 1.

3 Scientific Notation- 7.1b (Putting a number into scientific notation)
** The decimal point MUST go between the first TWO numbers!! #x10 Exponent The Number MUST go between 1 and The exponent is how many times the decimal point is moved! Put Each into Scientific Notation...

4 Scientific Notation- 7.1b (Putting a number into Standard form from SN)
Look at the exponent and move the decimal point that many times to its new location!

5 7.1 c) compare and order fractions, decimals, and percents, and numbers written in scientific notation < = Less Than > = Greater Than Ascending Order = Least to Greatest Descending Order = Greatest to Least When ordering #'s in SN, put the #'s in standard form first. Just Divide the Fraction to get a decimal. To get a decimal from a %, move to the left 2 times! To get a % from a decimal, move to the right 2 times!

6 7.1c compare and order fractions, decimals, and percents, and numbers written in scientific notation
Examples: (PUT ALL IN ASCENDING) .25, 25%, ¼, 3.3x102 2.3x103, 3.5x106, 4.29x101,

7 Square Roots- 7.1d Taking the square root of a number is the inverse of squaring the number. Every positive number has a positive and negative square root, since positive and a positive make a positive, and a negative and a negative make a positive.

8 Absolute Value 7.1e Absolute value is the distance from zero that can NEVER be negative!! AV of -10= 10 AV of 10 = 10 AV of -15= 15 AV of 15=15 AV of 15 + the AV of =35

9 Powers (Exponents)
