Characteristics of children suffering from ADHD symptoms: Can primary health care evaluate and diagnose ADHD? Sehovic-Duric N., Elgen I 1Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Helse Fonna Haugesund Hospital, Norway 2 Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, University of Bergen, Norway 3 Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway Sett inn diagram (For å sette inn diagram fra Excel. Merk og kopier diagrammet i Excel-arket, og lim det inn her. Deretter kan du justere størrelsen ved å trekke i hjørnene) Results Half of the ADHD-referred children met criteria for ADHD and among the non-ADHD children one fifth did not receive any diagnosis. Mean referral-age was 10,5 years and 82% were male. General health for ADHD children was comparable to non-ADHD children. The ADHD families had lower education levels and contained more housewives. More children were living outside their families compared to the non-ADHD children. Fewer ADHD families were in need of support from Child Welfare (CW) in the referral period (OR:0,23 ; 95% CI 0,1 to 3,1).The sensitivity was 51% (96/187) and specificity 77% regarding the primary health care`s ability to diagnose ADHD. Background/Aims To describe characteristics of children suffering from ADHD symptoms regarding ADHD.tekst Methods A population of 494 children was referred during one year to an outpatient clinic for Child and Adolescent Mental Health in Norway. Forty percent had ADHD symptoms as referral symptoms. A screening program regarding attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was employed, in addition, general health and socio-economic status was assessed. Conclusion More than one third of children in need of mental health services displayed ADHD symptoms but only half of these children met criteria for ADHD. A low sensitivity in primary health care regarding diagnosing ADHD was found. Further screening programs for ADHD children are needed.
