Teacher Competencies (R2S)
Standard 2: Curriculum and Instruction Teachers use instructional approaches, materials, and an integrated, comprehensive, balanced curriculum to support student learning in reading and writing. Standard 5: Literate Environment Teachers create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing by integrating foundational knowledge, instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials, and the appropriate use of assessments. Standard 7: Dual Language Learners (English Language Learners) Teachers create and engage their students in literacy practices that support dual language learners. Tell participants they probably already have a copy of the full document from their building Literacy Coach and they can find these on the SDE website. Mention that these are the main professional teaching standards and that when they read the document, they’ll see Elements listed in the same fashion that Indicators are listed and particular classroom teacher competencies are bulleted to the right of the Elements. Hold up my document quickly and go on. aiken county public school district

Balanced Literacy as seen in High Progress Literacy Classrooms (HPLCs)
Many, many books to read at students’ instructional and independent reading levels; various genres based on the interest of readers Kids fully engaged in extensive and diverse reading and writing, with most of the time devoted to kids doing the reading and writing—kids “getting lost” in their work Lots of small group and individualized instruction Intervention instruction and support for struggling readers Positive, literate classroom environments Multiple opportunities for self-direction and decision-making Positive, low-risk instruction that encourages ownership of literacy learning Source: Pressley et. al, Balanced literacy, as seen in HPLCs, indicates that these characteristics are present. Pay close attention to bullet #s 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7. Just know, when Reading AND Writing Workshop is EFFECTIVELY at work in your classrooms, you have HPLCs. aiken county public school district

Please have students “Just Write” so you will have tangible work samples to see the needs you will address. With the little ones, a teacher could think aloud and model how to spell her name, letters, draw pictures, or 2-3 word sentences (Yes, I love you, etc.). Release students to JUST WRITE during the work time. Teacher and para could float around to confer, take assessment notes, etc. Then have a couple of students participate in Author’s Chair. Activator Inside – Outside Circle aiken county public school district
Do the activator and debrief the activator. We will count off 1, 2 and 1, 2 and 1, 2 etc. to group ourselves like the diagram there. Remember your #. Count…1. 2 … Ones, form an inside circle and face outward like this. Twos, come on up and form an outside circle—facing someone who is already here. When it is all said and done, you should be facing one partner. If there is an odd person, I will partner. aiken county public school district
12
Activator Discuss: How can the balanced work we do with students during R/W Workshop affect the Profile of a SC Graduate? Let’s take a minute to share what you discussed. How CAN the balanced work we do with students…… ? What was this experience like for you? How might you possibly use this engagement with your little ones? aiken county public school district

Writing Workshop aiken county public school district
Let’s get right into Writing Workshop. Of course you would have your writing [and reading] materials in a place that’s accessible to the students, model and practice how to use them, when it appropriate to get them, have procedures and expectations (Rits/Routs) posted, practiced as often as needed, referred to, and firmly in place. Perhaps there could be a 1st and 2nd grade job for the Writing Area Patrol. You would notify the students of the classroom signal to come to the gathering area for writing or reading workshop (poem, song, music, chimes, etc.). You would tell them what to bring with them to the gathering area and how to let the materials rest under their right leg (?) until time to use them; etc. aiken county public school district

Mini-lesson Model to show what is expected
Must say writing or writing piece rather than calling it a story that you are writing or that the students will write when you release them. aiken county public school district
32
Work Time Independent Writing so students practice writing like you have just shown them. You want them to “Just Write”! “If you keep your gaze fixed on the page and wait for the child to act, an extraordinary number of children will actually write.” ~ Lucy Calkins Confer with students and record notes/mark checklist or rubric. “Although conferences appear to be warm, informal conversations, they are highly principled interactions designed to move writers along learning pathways.” ~ Lucy Calkins Remember to confer and hold a Guided Writing group for small group instruction. aiken county public school district
33
Closure Have students share their writing with a partner.
Highlight at least one student for Author’s Chair and/or Strategy Share. Talk about the positive things he did in his writing in relation to the Teaching Point. Bring Closure to Wtg Wkshp by referring to the LO or Teaching Point. Chart the skill or strategy on a writing anchor chart. Transition students back to their seats with music, poem, clap, etc. Kid’s Bop, stretching exercises, etc. to get the wiggles out and go on with your day. aiken county public school district

Ideas for Writing Opportunities
Shared Writing Interactive Writing Guided Writing Independent Writing Finger/Letter/Name Painting for PreK and K Dictation “Driting” for PreK, K and 1st Write the Room for PreK, K – 2nd Explain: Shared Writing: like Language Experience. Do together; students generate it-teacher writes it. Interactive Writing: generate and write together to a degree; teacher and students use pen; letter-word, etc. Guided Writing: Teacher works with a small group of 1 – 4 writers to shore up a skill/strategy. Independent Writing: Students write on their own with little to no help from the teacher. Finger Paint: Model, if time permits. Dictation: Sometimes teacher tells students what to write and they write it. Sometimes students tell the teacher what they want to say in their writing, teacher writes it so students can trace it and try to read it back. “Driting” explain and refer to handout. Write the Room: Students can look around the room, see something they can read, read it, then try to write it. Could give a flashlight with a colored bulb to highlight writings in the room. aiken county public school district
