Our topic this HALF term:
Temples, Tombs and Treasures What can we find out about ancient Egypt from what has survived? What were the achievements of the ancient Egyptians? The BIG Idea: The people who helped create the first great civilisations were not unlike you and me. Today we can learn a lot about these people and their way of life through the things they left behind – from everyday objects to magnificent and rare treasures.
6
Temples, tombs and treasures!
This term we will be exploring the life of the Ancient Egyptians! We will be: Creating an Egyptian dance. Discussing the geography of Egypt and why people settled there. Finding out about Howard Carter’s discoveries. Writing in hieroglyphics. Looking at the mummification process, and making canopic jars… …and much much more!!
7
Website The website is one of our most important ways of communicating with parents and carers. There will be key dates on the calendar: Meetings, Trips, Assemblies etc. Teachers will update the website with photos of your child’s learning at least twice a term.

Guided Reading All classes will be doing Guided Reading at 9.00am.
It is essential that children are on time so they do not miss any learning
21
Homework Each week the children will be given a homework sheet with maths, writing, spelling and discussion tasks. These need to be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday. Please look out for diary reminders on the bottom of the homework sheet. Children will also have their Mathletics login (in the front cover of their homework books) which they can access at anytime.
22
Reading at Home The expectation for Year 4 is that your child reads at least 5 times a week, for at least 10 minutes each time. We will visit the library once a week, where the children have the opportunity to choose a book and take it home. Each child has a reading record book. This must be signed and commented upon each time your child reads. This needs to be filled in by an adult. We will sign the children’s reading logs each week. If your child is a fluent reader and prefers to read to themselves, an adult must still be questioning them and writing comments about their understanding in their log.
23
Routines School Gates open at 8.30 for children and parents. Parents are responsible for and should stay with their children until 8.50. At 8.50 the the first bell will ring– children line up and parents move away from the line to ensure easy access to building. Class Teachers arrive at 8:50 to settle the children into a calm and orderly line. At 8.55 the second bell is rung and we will lead the children into school through the side door by the office. At the end of the day, the children must line up with their class teacher before being dismissed. If you are collecting another child please inform the office before the end of the day.
24
Wet Mornings Wet mornings are when there is heavy downpour and we consider it unreasonable to ask the children to remain outside. When the rain is a light drizzle or "spitting", the usual "dry" arrangements will apply. The system for wet mornings is as follows: Enter the building from the side entrance or the office entrance. Years 4 will go up the blue staircase and they will congregate in the top hall, seated in designated areas and will be supervised by the Leadership Team.
25
Instruments The children are really excited about learning the trumpet this year! We would appreciate it if you could support your child to practise regularly, so that they make the best progress possible. Please ensure that your child brings their instrument to school every Monday and we will make sure that they take them home. Instruments are the responsibility of the children – they can be expensive, so please care for them. Any repairs will be dealt with by the instrumental teacher. Trumpet lessons-every Monday
26
Healthy Packed Lunches
Please ensure your child has a well-balanced packed lunch e.g. a sandwich, water, piece of fruit or veg, yogurt, oat cakes etc. It is suggested that crisps are reserved for Fridays, when school dinners would be having chips as a treat.
27
Snacks and birthdays Children are allowed to bring in a piece of fresh fruit to eat at playtime. As we are a healthy school, we do not allow children to bring in fruit wrapped like sweets, cereal bars, biscuits, sweets. Birthday treats- we are happy to hand out individual cupcakes No nuts please!

How can you help your child?
By ensuring your child’s first name and surname are on all uniform items-either as a label or written clearly using permanent pen. Ensuring your child can manage footwear independently – if they wear lace-up shoes to school, it is important that they are able to tie laces themselves.
