18 Pinewood Derby March 24th/25th, 2017 – Epiphany Lutheran Church Family Life Center – Time 8am The competition is fierce! Start planning your designs now! Don’t forget your sibling cars too.

19 Pinewood Derby Friday 24th 6pm – 8pm– Cars must be officially weighed in to race Saturday 25th 8am -12pm – Race Day!! Cars will be raced multiple times. Sibling cars will race separately to the official pinewood derby.

20 Pinewood Derby Weight: Scout cars are 5 ounces
Sibling cars can be 8 ounces Weight will be added or removed at check-in You must use the kit that was provided. You can shape it but wheel base needs to remain the same There are resources on line and in print to help design a competitive car.

21 Pinewood Derby Derby Car Weight Rules
The car shall not exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale that is used at car check-in shall be considered final. Sibling cars can be up to 8 ounces. Car Modifications Not Allowed The official pine wood block must be used. The block may be shaped in any way that is desired. However you cannot change the distance between the wheels, width wise and length wise. You need to keep 3/8” of space between the bottom of the car to the ground. Less will cause the bottom to touch the track. Official BSA wheels must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels. The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.

22 Pinewood Derby Other Pinewood Derby Race Rules
Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it. If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repairs. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these rules. Recommendations Use a kitchen scale to get as close to, but never above, 5 ounces total weight. You can use a drill to remove excess weight. When adding weight, make sure that the center of gravity is in between the front and back wheel set, but as much as possible toward the rear wheel set, this will give it the highest speed the longest. You can use coins, nails, etc. for weights. However, Hobby Lobby sells putties and special weights designed for derby cars. Hobby lobby also sells books with tips on how to make the car as fast as possible. Highly recommended for the more competitive “scouts” among us.
