1
The role of SCO in the implementation of
The Mesoamerican Biological Corridor in Mexico November 2009
2
The MBC extends over 8 Mesoamerican countries, with a common objective
Stopping fragmentation of ecosystems and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources In a region with 10% of all known biological species and 40 million inhabitants
3
In Mexico, out of 11 million hectares of tropical forest, only one is left in an acceptable state of conservation
4
Biological corridors connect protected areas to form a continuous network uninterrupted by borders of areas with management systems compatible with conservation
5
Land use changes 1980 – 2000 Forests and tropical rainforests lost in biological corridors in Mexico

Rate or index of socioeconomic poverty
9
The MBC-M has worked for almost 10 years in the states of Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche with more than 500 communities, their grass-root organizations and NGO
10
MBC-M strategies in alliance with SCO Applying connectivity criteria
Protection and restoration of biodiversity Sustainable use of natural resources Mainstreaming of environmental policies Coordination with local governments Attention to producer groups and local and indigenous communities Regional cooperation with Mesoamerica
11
MBC-M strategies in alliance with SCO
Generating communitarian agreements for conservation and development Promotion of biological conservation and productive conversion of the territory through economic inversions in sustainable projects Each production unit agrees to environmental internal laws: no fire, reforestation, conservation
14
Convenios para el Manejo de Tierras
Ecoturismo Convenios para el Manejo de Tierras Ejidal-Comunitario Servicios Ambientales Manejo Forestal Sustentable
15
Evidence of sustainable environmental use
Improving connectivity of ecosystems Preserving remaining natural ecosystems Participative land use zoning Multilevel biological monitoring
16
Indicators of sustainable environmental use
Stopping deforestation rates Shade-grown coffee Apiculture Ecotourism
17
Indicators of sustainable environmental use
Mainstreaming environmental policies Agriculture Indigenous People Women
18
Indicators of sustainable environmental use
Improvement of the quality of life of local inhabitants Fostering sustainable and competitive production systems consistent with the conservation of biodiversity Promoting access to green markets
19
Other important results
Sustainable wildlife management
20
Biological corridors are meant to be territories where inhabitants can benefit from the use natural resources to overcome poverty and improve their quality of life, however without exceeding the load capacity of ecosystems or diminishing social cohesion.
21
Other sectors Environmental sector
22
From Mexico to Panama, biological corridors have proven to be successful in promoting sustainable natural resource uses
23
Expansion of the MBC in Mexico
First stage: seven states Second stage: nine states Puebla and Guerrero Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche plus Tabasco , Oaxaca and Veracruz
24
Our greater tasks Promoting a National Biological Corridors Policy
Supporting the implementation of the Mesoamerican Strategy for Environmental Sustainability Strengthening grass-root organizations NGOs and its networks Obtaining financial support for the project: ‘Fostering sustainable and competitive production systems consistent with the conservation of biodiversity’
25
Project objectives Foster sustainable productive chains of goods and services based on biodiversity, to focus on a development strategy in the region that makes conservation of ecosystems and improvement in the living conditions of its inhabitants compatible: 1. Strengthening productive capacities 2. Fostering markets for sustainable production 3. Commercial mainstreaming of sustainable production
