1 Interlinking of rivers as an adaption strategy to address the impact of climate change on water resources Sustainable Lifestyle = Positive Climate Action

2 Issues and Challenges • Seasonal and Temporal variation in Water Availability Most of the Rainfall taking place 3-4 months of monsoon Wide variation in water availability among basins and regions. • Recurring Floods in some areas and droughts in some • Increase in water demands for various sectors for needs of ever rising population Likely impacts of climate change

10 Special Committee for “Interlinking of Rivers”
A Special Committee for ILR under Hon’ble Minister (WR,RD&GR) has been constituted Ten meetings of the Special Committee for ILR have been held. Special Committee for ILR has constituted four specific sub-committees; Sub-committee for comprehensive evaluation of various studies/reports (6 meetings held so far) (ii) Sub- Committee for system studies for identification of most appropriate alternate plan (9 meetings held so far) (iii) Sub-Committee for consensus building through negotiations and arriving at agreement between concerned States (2 meetings held so far) (iv) Sub – Committee for restructuring of National Water Development Agency (7 meeting held, report completed & submitted). 10

11 Inter-linking of Rivers
Inter-linking of Rivers •Response to Climate Change Increase in global temperature With Expected increase in rainfall intensities and shorter durations, the Storages created for ILR will be useful in storing water in such an eventuality Useful both for floods and drought management. Will benefit all the inter-connected Basins including the donor basins

12 Inter-linking of Rivers
Inter-linking of Rivers •Response to Climate Change Decrease in global temperature Transfer is being planned on huge monsoon surpluses and not on snowfed surpluses from Himalayan Rivers. Flow during non-monsoon is adequate for the demands of the basin itself. But if the snow contribution is reduced the storages created will be beneficial for the basin itself. Based on water availability in connected basins, water can be judiciously utilized in both the basins.
