9-pin and 24-pin printers.
The pins are arranged vertically on the head :

In contrast to 9-pin printers, a 24-pin printer uses two rows of pin in a shifted arrangement. Thus the printed dots overlap and realise a higher quality.
With EPSON-printers like DFX-8500, DFX etc. there are 2x9 pin in the head. The pins have the same arrangements like those of a 24-pin printer (ie. parallel). 2x9 pins printers can perform Copy mode (2 dots impact at the same location), so that density is higher.

2. Due to this charge, the actuating plate moves towards the head driving coil
3. The Pin, which is attached to the actuating plate, strikes the paper through the Ink ribbon, leaving an ink dot on the paper.

2. On-carriage ribbon cartridges :
Two types of ribbon available : The black one and the colour one.
The ribbon is installed on the carriage itself. For the colored ribbon, the ribbon moves upward or downward according to the color requested.

The process explained previously showed how to print one dot.
The print head is installed on a carriage which moves from right to left in order to print multiple dots :

The user can use with a SIDM a lot of different papers :

Depending on the paper Thickness, the user can adjust the gap between the Head and the Platen. This adjustment can be manual or automatic, it’s called the Platen-Gap.

By adjusting manually this lever, the gap between the Print Head and the Platen can be increased
or decreased, according to the paper used.

The paper feeding mechanism has 2 functions :
* Feed cut sheets using the friction feed mechanism
A cut sheet is installed in the printer and is driven by friction.

* Feed continuous paper using a tractor feed :
Continuous paper
Tractor are used to accurate the paper feeding, can also be used to « park » the continuous paper while printing from another path.
A tractor is used to feed continuous paper.
