1 Graphing Data Using excel 2nd Grade

2 Overview Excel Project- Graphing Susie Fjeldal Audience: 2nd Grade
NJCCC Standard 2.MD.10 (Measurement and Data: Represent and Interpret Data)- Draw a picture graph and a bar graph to represent a data set up to four categories. Students will solve simple put together, take apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph. Time Line- 4 days Objective: SWDAT create a tally, spreadsheet grid, collect and analyze data and create a simple vertical bar graph to show results Day 1: After review of: tally marks, survey, data, and table, as whole group instruction, we will ask the survey: What is your favorite candy? Choices including M&M’s, Swedish Fish, 3 Musketeers, Milky Ways. Teacher will ask each student the survey one at a time, recording their responses using tally marks. Students will also record the data on their paper. Teacher will model and show how to use excel to transfer the responses in a table. Last teacher will show how to take the information from the table and create a bar graph in excel. Day 2- Students will work with a partner to create a survey containing four choices. Partners will brainstorm and write out a question containing four choices. Students will the choices. They will collect data by walking around the classroom, asking their question and collecting answers given by their peers. They will collect the data in the form of tally marks. Day 3- Partners will use excel to enter their choices and data collected into a table with a predetermined formula. Then students will create a graph using a spreadsheet. Partners will create a bar graph using excel including a title for the graph and labels for the y and x axis. Day 4- Share information gathered. Assessment/Evaluation: rubric and completed excel project

3 Day 1: Whole Group Instruction Survey, Collect Data, Transfer Data into a Table with Formulas
Teacher will ask the survey: What is your favorite candy? Choices: M & M’s Swedish Fish Milky Way 3 Musketeers Teacher will ask the survey to one student at a time and record their responses using tally marks. Students will follow along on their paper. Next Step: Transfer the data collected from the survey into a table using formulas. Survey: What is your favorite candy? Choices Tally Marks Swedish Fish Milky Way M & Ms 3 Musketeers

4 Transfer Data into a Table Teacher directed and models lesson step by step
Survey: What is your favorite candy? Choices Tally Marks Swedish Fish Milky Way M & Ms 3 Musketeers

5 Creating a Graph using Excel- Teacher Directed Instruction
First: Teacher will model step by step directions on how to select a graph using excel. Next: Students will be shown how to: Title the Graph Name the x and y axis. Last: Teacher will show how to change graph styles once students input their data on a group level basis.

6 Day 2: Student Generated Surveys & Data students will walk around the room to collect data from the surveys Survey: What is your favorite animal? Choices Tally Marks fish cat dog bird Survey: What is your favorite football team? Choices Tally Marks NY Giants NY Jets New England Patriots Miami Dolphins Survey: What is your favorite special class? Choices Tally Marks Art Gym Music Spanish

7 Day 3: Enter Data and Graph
Students enter their survey choices and data collected from the survey into an excel table. The table will include a predetermined formula adding the total sum of the entered data. A bar graph will be created as students enter the data.

8 Students’ Completed Excel Tables and Graphs

9 Evaluation students completed work will be evaluated based on a rubic
Category 4 3 2 1 Title Title clearly relates to the information being graphed. It is at the top of the graph with proper capitalization. Title relates to the information being graphed and is printed at the top of the graph. A title is present at the top of the graph but is reflected of the data.. A title is not present. Axis Labels Labels clearly relate to the information on each axis with proper capitalization.. Labels are clear but labeled in the wrong axis. The labels are present, but may not describe the information Labels are not present. Presentation of Graph Students use customized bar designs. All bars are correct size and are easy to see with some customized bar designs. All bars are correct size with little customized bar designs. All bars are correct size with no customized bar design
