www.innovateuk.org Concept to Commercialisation
A strategy for business innovation, Our goal is to accelerate economic growth by stimulating and supporting business-led innovation The strapline is ‘concept to commercialisation’ and you will see copies of this document, along with others, on the table which is With the exception of the case studies there should be enough literature for everyone to take a copy but should they run out or if you require more information, please talk to one of the advisers or myself or else visit the TSB website where you will find all this information. For that very reason I have deciedd not to print speaker notes but if you are interested, I can put the presentations online for you to refer to.

Innovation and Knowledge Centres Entrepreneur Missions
The Toolset Range of Tools with different objectives / characteristics Smart Launchpad SO...there is no one-size-fits-all pot of money to dip into. Depending on the stage of development, the needs that a company has, previous funding history and, to a certain extent, size, there are a wide range of different mechanisms through which to engage with the TSB. Today’s meeting will focus on 4 of these – three ‘always-open’ funding tools and the KTNs but will also make mention of the ‘challenge competitions’ and the Catapults. Collaborative R&D Innovation and Knowledge Centres Entrepreneur Missions

What are Knowledge Transfer Networks?
Established by the TSB to: Stimulate innovation in the UK’s key technology sectors Link different organisations - each playing a part in delivering the objectives Provide a means of efficiently using the support mechanisms already available I don’t need to read the slide. Essentially we are there to connect and catalyse or facilitate the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry and between companies, all the while referring to the emerging legislative landscape
5
Where we work The ESKTN works primarily within these areas and addresses these themes that run throughout the four topic areas, driven by these global factors

Uses the power of government procurement to drive innovation
Lets companies engage with the public sector to solve problems 100% of the funding is provided through a contract not a grant e.g. Current ‘Wetland Biomass to Bioenergy’ demonstrations Similarly the Small Business Research Initiatives are themed calls that are issued from time to time by public sector organizations. Open to all, they favour SMEs and have the added benefit of being 100% funded

To the meat of today’s event then – the tools that are always-at-hand – starting with Innovation Vouchers

And so to the second of the ready-when-you-are mechanisms - Smart

Smart Funding to small and medium-sized enterprises for R&D projects in science, engineering and technology Previously known as Grant for Research and Development Three types of grant are available: Proof of market Proof of concept Development of prototype

Technology Strategy Board Funding opportunities
Localised energy systems: a cross sector approach A collaborative research and development competition to stimulate innovation in localised energy systems. There is an opportunity for businesses to develop new products, services, and solutions in and across the energy, built environment, transport and digital sectors supporting the integration of technologies into energy systems, including those of energy users and producers, at a scale from clusters of buildings up to whole districts. For this competition, energy systems include electricity, combustible gases, heating and cooling systems, and alternative fuels.

Technology Strategy Board Funding opportunities
Localised energy systems: a cross sector approach The competition opens on the 20th January 2014 and closes on the 19th March 2014. Industrial research Up to £11m is available (Up to £1.5m of which is for academic EPSRC) Business led and collaborative Match funded 50% (60% SME) Projects will need to demonstrate cross sector working (at least 2 of the 4 sectors) Download a copy of the competition brief from

Other funding opportunities
DECC & DEFRA - £15 million Rural Community Energy Fund Launched in June 2013 to help eligible rural communities fund local renewable energy projects including wind, solar, biomass, heat pumps, anaerobic digestion, gas CHP and hydro Two stage process Up to £20,000 grant for feasibility studies Up to a further £130,000 unsecured loan to help with planning permission/environmental permits

Other funding opportunities
Dept for Transport - £25 million Advanced Biofuel Demonstration Advanced biofuels are made from materials, for example municipal waste and forestry residues, using complex processing techniques. They can produce a wide range of transport fuels including replacements for those used in road transport and aviation. To enable the construction of demonstration-scale waste to fuel and other advanced biofuel plants in the UK. The funding will be provided over three years from 2015 following a competition to identify the best and most suitable industry proposals.

Success Stories DECC Wetland Biomass to Bioenergy Demonstrations
Last year DECC invested £2m to develop and demonstrate an efficient bioenergy system that optimises existing wetland management activities and utilises the biomass waste. The three successful projects will be hosting a demonstration of their new integrated processes; 29th /30th January 2014 – AB Systems, Ashcott, Somerset 12th /13th February 2014 – AB Systems, Darsham, Suffolk 5th/ 6th March 2014 – Natural Synergies, Ashcott, Somerset 19th/ 20th March 2014 – AMW/IBERS, Kingussie, Scotland To register your interest in attending go to
