1 Chapter 14 Techniques of Plant Propagation

2 Chapter 14:Techniques of Plant Propagation
OBJECTIVES: Determine suitable propagation media. Determine propagation media materials. Define words associated with seed propagation. List and describe propagation techniques.

3 The media for propagation must create an environment for the cutting base that will:
Support the cutting - Retain moisture uniformly - Drain away excess water uniformly - Provide adequate aeration - Not support weeds and other pests - Pasteurize easily

4 The propagation media will usually contain 1 or more of the following materials:
Natural soil Sand Peat moss Sphagnum moss Perlite Vermiculite Fired clay

5 Peat moss

6 Sphagnum moss

7 Perlite

8 Vermiculite

9 Sand or peat moss are often added to the growing medium to improve texture, moisture retention, and drainage.

10 Propagation by Seeds: Scarification – seed coat dormancy.
Stratification – temperature dormancy. Cotyledons – the seed leaves; first leaves to develop. Hardening off –gradual adaptation of plants to environmental conditions more stressful than their present ones.

11 Propagation Techniques:
Plugs - Seedlings that retain their undisturbed root system within a core of media. Cuttings - Pieces of root, leaves, or stems that are removed from parent plant and placed in an environment that promotes development into total plants. Vegetative growth is selected for cuttings on species that are difficult to root.

12 Propagation Techniques:
Graft - Union of parts from 2+ plants into a single plant. Compatible graft - when graft union is successful and 2 plants become 1. Incompatible graft - when graft union is unsuccessful and 2 plants do not unite. Callus - wound tissue.

13 Propagation Techniques:
Budding - Type of grafting that uses a bud for the scion.

14 Propagation Techniques:
Tissue Culturing - Repro of plants from tiny pieces of plant organs; newest propagation technique. Conditions must remain totally sterile, or aseptic.

15 Propagation Techniques:
Layering - A severed stem that remains attached to parent plant until roots grow at the cut. - Methods of Layering – Simple, Tip, Mound, Air, Serpentine
