Unit 2- Computer Hardware
2
Objectives Identify system components
Describe the role of the central processing unit Define computer memory Identify types of storage devices Care for storage media Pass out an advertisement to identify specifications as we go through the unit.
3
Case Box that contains components Tower case All-in-one
What kind of case is in the ad?
4
Monitor Displays the images LCD- thin LED- very thin CRT (old)
Very bulky Measured diagonally 13”, 15”, 17”, etc. What kind of monitor is in the ad? LED uses less energy.
5
Inside the Computer Will you have to go in the computer? Probably not. But you should know about the most important components so you can buy a good computer.
6
Motherboard Circuit board Connects all components
CPU Memory Hard drive Bus on bottom of motherboard Path to transfer data to components
7
How fast is your computer?- CPU
Central Processing Unit Processor or “Brain” How fast it processes instructions Intel, AMD brands Speed measured in Gigahertz (GHz) 2.2Ghz, 3GHz Speed of CPU is not the most important CPUs are pretty equal today Millions or billions of instructions per second Find the CPU brand and speed of a laptop/desktop in your ad.
8
How much memory ?- RAM Random Access Memory
Active programs/data are held here when running Stores what you are creating “Short-term memory” Disappears when computer is off Measured in Gigabytes (GB) 8GB is standard now Explain: Typing up a paper and you copy a picture from the Internet. It puts it in temporary memory (RAM). If you copy a picture and shut the computer off, the next time you turn your computer on, you won’t be able to paste the picture. Stuff in RAM goes away with no power. More RAM= the more things you can do at the same time. (Multitasking) Not enough RAM, slows down! How much RAM is in the computer in your ad?
9
What Do You Have? In Search, type System or About My PC
MAC Instructions: Go to the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Demo this on the classroom computers. Demo how to snip & Print Screen.
10
Project Create a PowerPoint about your Laptop or Desktop
Slide 1- Title Slide Picture of your device & your name Slide 2- Monitor or Screen Have your name or pic on screen Size of screen & type (LCD/LED or CRT) Slide 3- System Info Screenshot of info List brand & speed of CPU List amount of RAM
11
How does your computer boot?- ROM
Read Only Memory Chip on motherboard with software BIOS Has instructions to boot your computer Read only- no store data Tells where OS is stored (HD) Info stays when power is off
12
Boot Process Power on the PC ROM/BIOS checks for location of OS
Usually on the hard drive Loads OS from hard drive into RAM OS Starts You log in
13
Review- 3Q What speed is a CPU measured in?
GHz Which memory holds your active, running programs or what you copied? RAM Which type of monitor is shown? CRT
14
Review- 4Q Which memory goes away when power is off?
RAM What holds the computer’s boot instructions? ROM/BIOS What is the brains of a computer? CPU- what does it stand for? The CPU, RAM, and ROM all connect to what component? Motherboard
15
Storage Device- Hard Drive
Store data permanently Long-term storage GB or TB 500GB 1TB Inside Case or External External connects to USB port Open Word- Word is stored on the hard drive. When you open it, it goes from HD to RAM to run. About 250,000 mp3 songs can fit on a 1TB hard drive. What size HD is on the computer in your ad?
16
Storage Device- Optical
Optical uses a laser to read/write data CD or DVD-ROM= Read Only CD or DVD-/+R= Record Once CD or DVD-/+RW= Rewritable BD-R= Blu-ray Record Once CD= 80 min./ 700MB DVD= 2 hrs./ 4.7GB BD= 4.5 hrs. of HD/ 25GB
17
How much can it hold? CD (700MB) DVD (4.7GB or about 4700MB)
Photos & MP3 songs are about 3MB each How many can fit on a CD-R? DVD (4.7GB or about 4700MB) An average 90min movie is about 900MB How many movies will fit on a DVD-R? BD (25GB or about 25,000MB) How many photos can fit on a BD-R? CD-R holds about 233 photos. DVD-R holds about 1567 photos. DVD-R holds about 5 90min DVD quality movies. BD-R holds about 8333 photos.
18
What Do You Have? Size of Hard Drive & Type of Optical Drive:
Click “This PC” Logos on/next to optical drive
19
Storage Device- Flash No moving parts Memory Cards Flash drives
SD/SDHC, microSD, CF, Memory Stick Laptops, Tablets, Phones usually have slots Flash drives In Tablets & Phones Handout with flash memory cards to ID.
20
Project The PowerPoint with your device Slide 4- Hard Drive
Screenshot of HD space from This PC List how big the HD is Slide 5- Optical Drive Picture of the drive/cover & This PC showing type List if it takes CD, DVD, BD and if it records anything Slide 6- Flash Storage Picture of laptop/tablet/phone card storage or flash drive Picture of the card or drive List the size & type of card or drive
21
Storage Device- SSD In very thin laptops No moving parts inside
Faster & smaller HDD cheaper right now & comes in larger size What kind of HD is in the ad?
22
Storage Device- Floppy Disks
8-inch ¼” ½” 3.5” Disk only held 1.44MB (Megabytes) Most photos are about 3MB!
23
Computer Specifications Poster
Each group of 2 will be assigned a device Look up specifications Fill in a poster with the correct specs Include a picture of the device
24
Review- 3Q T/F. Hard drives are used to temporarily store what you are creating. False Which removable storage would you use to copy pictures from one PC to another? Flash Drive, Memory Card, Floppy, or Ext. HD Flash, Mem Card, or Ext HD Which optical storage would be used to store music and then later erased to store photos? CD-RW
25
Review- 3Q How much data can a Blu-Ray DVD hold?
25GB If pictures are about 3MB each, how many pictures could you put on that disc? About 8300! Which storage device has no moveable parts? SSD/Flash
