2. Classifying Based on Shared Features
Biologists divide animals into groups based on their similarities.
Example: Sparrows, Falcons, and Flamingos are all birds because they all have feather

3. To classify something is to group things based on features they share.
Scientists use similar features of organisms to determine how they relate.
They use similarities in:
Appearance
Cell structure
Heredity material in cells
How the organism gets nutrients
How the Organism reproduces
Organisms that have more features in common are more related!

4. Seven Levels of Classification
Kingdom (Highest level of classification) Phylum (Subdivision of a kingdom) Class Order Family Genus (A group of living things that includes separate species) Species (A group of organisms that can breed with each other to produce offspring like themselves)

6. Scientists created scientific names for animals to prevent confusion.
A scientific name is the name given to each species consisting of its genus and its species.
