Sample Plan This is an 8th grade Science lesson. The lessons before this were about soil formation and soil composition.
5
Engagement Listen to this song: LT: Students will apply their knowledge of soil and explain its importance by using scientific processes to complete an investigation. What do you think we may be doing today? How would science be used to do it?
6
Exploration Use your lab sheet to organize, investigate and evaluate the evidence. Submit your findings in a detailed lab report.
7
Evidence Statements Soil Composition findings
Soil analysis from each suspect: Sample A—topsoil with 50% trace of potting soil mixed in Sample B- Subsoil-B horizon Sample C- soil with 85% sand Sample D-Topsoil-with pieces of the nearby flowers
8
Explanation Teacher reveals the results of the findings
Students make connections to soil composition findings and analysis reports from previous day’s lesson. Look at the three learning targets from this week. Which one was not addressed in our investigation today? LT1: Soil Formation LT2: Soil Composition LT3: Soil Compatibility
9
Elaboration 1. In your group, each person will search for a different career that involves at least 2 of the components of our previous learning targets: Soil Formation, Soil Composition, Soil/Plant Compatibility 2. Explain your career and answer the following question in your INB: How is having this knowledge beneficial in that vocation? 3. Think-Pair-Share
10
Exit Ticket On an index card, answer the following question: How is soil important to us, our environment, and our society? Explain your answer.
11
Engagement-Listen to the music
LT: I can explain how the laws of motion affect the solar system. As you listen, write down 2 statements you may have about today’s learning. What do you think we will learn today?
