1 Fourth Grade Unit 8 Measurement

2 There is a lot of information that you will need to know about measurement!
Length Elapsed Time Weight Capacity Temperature

3 Know it...about length! When we are measuring length, we are trying to figure out how long an object is. There are two systems of length that we use to determine length--- the Customary System and the Metric System.

12 inches = 1 foot 36 inches = 1 yard 3 feet = 1 yard 1,760 yards = 1 mile 5,280 feet = 1 mile

6 Know appropriate measures for distances!
Measure small objects using inches, such as erasers and books. If it’s as big as you are, use feet! If it is as big as your backyard, use yards! Miles measures the most distance.. You go far in your car!

7 Metric Length We can walk 1 km in about 10 minutes. About half a mile.

10 millimeters = 1 centimeter 10 centimeters = 1 decimeter 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer Use prefixes to help you remember conversions!

10 Know it…about capacity!
Capacity tells the amount a container can hold. Capacity can be measured using measuring cups or measuring spoons. There are 2 systems we use to measure capacity---customary and metric!

There are 4 main units of customary capacity! Gallons—Gal Quarts—Qt Pints—Pt Cups--C

12 Use the “Big G” to help with conversions!

13 Know it..about metric capacity!
There are 2 main units of customary capacity! Liter– L Milliliter-- mL A milliliter is about a drop. There are 1,000 milliliters in one liter. 1,000 mL = 1 L

14 Know it…about elapsed time!
Elapsed time describes the passing of time. It answers the question: How much time has passed? Knowing how to tell time is a MUST for calculating elapsed time. 12 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Each large number on a clock represents 5 minutes. 60 minutes = 1 hour

15 Know strategies for calculating elapsed time!
Draw an analog clock to help you! Make a table like this: Create a timeline. Activity Start Time End Time Elapsed Time

16 Know it…about weight! “How heavy is it?”
We use two systems to measure weight, or mass—Customary and Metric. Scales can be used to measure weight.

17 Know it…about customary weight!
There are two units we use in the customary system of weight. ounces pounds 1 lb = 16 oz.

18 Know it…about metric weight!
There are two units we use in the metric system of weight. grams kilograms 1,000 g= 1 kg kilo= 1,000
