Make sure you read the title of a map before you start to use it. This will give you a general idea about the information it stores, such as the location and purpose. Title: /ˈtʌɪt(ə)l/ the name of a book, picture and so on Location /lə(ʊ)ˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/: a particular place or position

Scale indicator: The scale of a map allows a reader to calculate the size, height and dimensions of the features shown on the map, as well as distances between different points. The scale on a map is the ratio between real life sizes. This is a scale of a map. If the distance on a map is 4.5 cm, then what does it represent in the real life? Three types of scale: Bar scale Verbal scale Representative fraction Verbal scale (word statement) expresses in words a relationship between a map distance and a ground distance. Usually it is along the lines of: One inch represents 16 miles. A map scale in which figures representing units (as centimeters, inches, or feet) are expressed in the form of the fraction or ratio on the earth’s surface. A bar scale (linear scale) showing that 1cm on the map corresponds to 6 km.

7 Orientation /ˌɔːrɪənˈteɪʃ(ə)n,ˌɒr-/ is vital for finding your way around a map.
It tells you the relative position or direction of something. Compass is a good tool to help you find the direction.

8 Border /ˈbɔːdə/ is a line separating two countries, administrative divisions, or other areas.
It is the edge or boundary of something, or the part near it.

9 The orange line is the border of the United States.

10 Legend /ˈlɛdʒ(ə)nd/ is the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used.
For instance, The experimental conditions were as described in the legend to Figure 5.
