15 Best Practices for Research
Created by: Nandini Ghoshal (Professional Research Consultant) & Avni Martin (Head of Research) Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

16 Best Practices for Research
Business Case for Research Project Four Stages of Research Project Categories of Research Qualitative vs Quantitative Research Questionnaire Design Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

17 Case for Research Project
Evaluation of research question Pre-project research, review of previous research on topic Desk research Qualitative research Robust project planning with roles, timelines, budgets Creating a business case for project Approving a business case for project Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

18 Four Stages Of Research Project
1. Pre research Securing the budgets Converting research idea into information points Creating the questionnaire If main questionnaire is to be quantitative then, create qualitative questions to make quantitative questions better Conduct qualitative study on small sample to test main questionnaire Refine the main questionnaire with inputs from qualitative testing Load the quantitative survey on IT platform Testing the quantitative questionnaire on small sample 2. Research Fielding and distributing the questionnaire Monitoring the survey responses Data analysis plan 3. Data Extraction & charting of data 4. Reporting Report writing, publishing & distributing Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

19 Categories of Research
1. Foundational or Academic Increases the overall understanding & knowledge of the product or service or topic Answers ‘Why buy this?’ Motivations, barriers & drivers of usage Purchase cycle Decision making process Can be qualitative or quantitative Often peer reviewed 2. Tracking or Commercial Answers a specific business question & track the trends in product, service or topic: Trends (like spending, usage) Looks at a topic of focus from multiple angles Monitors consumer likes & dislikes Checks response to ads or a business change Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

20 Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research
1. Qualitative Survey: Used to uncover deeper barriers and motivations; or to refine a quantitative survey Sample qualitative survey is developed This is tested with 2-3 respondents to refine the questionnaire Looks for saturation in responses, i.e. it ensures that enough interviews have been completed that nothing new would be uncovered with additional interviews Typically needs respondents with quality questionnaire 2. Quantitative Survey: Used for quantification of trends Requires validated scales, generally a minimum of 3 items per scale Sample quantitative survey is developed The questionnaire is qualitatively tested with 3-5 interviews to refine it Usually min 100 respondents are surveyed to represent a good sample of the intended population Response rate is typically 5-10% so to get 100 respondents, survey needs to be sent to minimum 1500 people Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017

21 Questionnaire Design 1. Profiling questions 2. Main body of questions
name of company name of respondent gender age number of years of experience location designation permanent or temporary contract 2. Main body of questions Questions must flow logically Be easy to answer Must take no more than 20 mins to answer in total Each question must be designed to give clear & meaningful data Prepared By Avni Martin & Nandini Ghoshal June 2017
