Economic relations between countries are measured by the ratio of their exports and imports of goods and services to their GDP (openness= (Ex+Im)/GDP)
Openness is higher for smaller and developing countries, but why? (fig. 1-1)
In general, trade grows faster than production (fig.1-2)
Standards of living depend on trade:
1) Many raw materials are imported from abroad.
2) Many products if produced domestically will cost more than abroad, so its better to import them.
