1 ThURSDAY, October 29 Do your vocab warm-up Side 2
If the words fit, they are right. Hand in when done Then 10 minutes to read

2 The counter argument W.1, RI.8
Remember in the film when we acknowledged the counterargument? If you were on Anna’s side, we said we’d understand why the mom thought the way she did. Why is it important to look at the other side? W.1, RI.8

3 What goes in the counter argument?
IV. Counterargument - this is where you acknowledge then shoot down the other side of your argument using evidence and facts. A. State the other side of the topic or claim      B.  Why do some people feel that way?  What is their most compelling or important reason? C.  Why are they wrong and you right      D.  Concluding sentence that ties back to your claim

4 Let’s look at some examples:
Claim: Hunting shouldn’t be banned Some people believe that hunting should be banned. They think that hunting is dangerous and a waste of resources. Hunting can be dangerous if people are not careful or not trained. Hunting also uses natural resources but Hunting controls population. Controlling population leads more food for other animals. Hunting can be safe too, people can take classes called hunters safety and can also be taught to shoot a gun safely. These are reasons why hunting shouldn’t be banned.

5 Claim: Kids should not have smart phones
Some people might defend that their child needs a smartphone in order for them to keep in touch and keep tabs on their child. From ages twelve and under someone doesn’t need their child to have a smartphone to keep in touch. Parents should know where their child or children are at all times if they are at a young age. Whether their children are at an after school activity or a sport, or spending the night at a friend’s house, a parent should know about it. Parents shouldn’t leave the responsibility on a child to call them and tell them where they are or need to be picked up. Also, at a younger age, a child most likely will not be in situations where their parents wouldn't know where they are. This is why children younger than twelve should not have a smartphone.

6 Firearms should not be banned
People believe that a ban on firearms would be a good thing. They say that fewer guns would mean a reduction in violent crimes and, therefore, less crime in general. But in reality, areas that have more control on firearms have higher crime rates compared to areas with less control on firearms. In Washington D.C., a ban on handguns took effect in The city’s murder rate tripled by the 1990’s. Then when Chicago copied D.C.’s handgun ban in 1982, within 10 years the city’s handgun-related murders doubled (Wintersteen). A ban on firearms is completely unnecessary and would only lead to more problems and crimes.

7 Let’s try one together: remember our Kittens should be allowed in the classroom claim?

8 Rubric for counterargument paragraph
1. Clearly states the main opposing point to your argument 2. Explains why the opposition might believe this 3. Your rebuttal to the opposing argument (knock it down - crush it - explain why you are right and they are wrong) [can use a source here, as well] 4. Tie your rebuttal back to our thesis 5. Grammar, punctuation correct 6. Double spaced
