1 Pop Art/ Commercialism
The Movement in History

2

3 Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the mid-1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the United States. Pop Art presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular culture such as advertising, news, etc. In Pop Art, material is sometimes visually removed from its known context and combined with unrelated material. The concept of Pop Art refers not as much to the art itself as to the attitudes that led to it.

4 Pop Art often takes as its imagery from logos for example: Campbell's Soup Cans , by Andy Warhol.
Even the labeling on shipping boxes containing retail items has been used as subject matter in pop art, as in Warhol's Campbell's Tomato Juice Box or his Brillo Soap Box sculptures.

5 Artist: Andy Warhol

6 The words Pop Art came from the root word Popular.
Based on what you’ve learned so far, tell me in your own words…what statement was Warhol making by painting a soup can?

11 Jasper Johns

12 Jasper Johns was an artist that came onto the scene in the 1950s .
Much of the work that he created was accepted into Pop culture & it’s movement but led the American public away from Expressionism towards an art movement known as the Concrete. He loved painting flags, bulls eyes and maps . He was a leading force to the pop form known as Minimalism. His work continues to sell for very high values in the Art world today.

18 Roy Lichtenstein

19 Roy Fox Lichtenstein :Pop Artist
His work defined the basic premise of pop art through parody. Favoring the comic strip as his main inspiration, Lichtenstein produced hard-edged compositions that parodied often in a tongue-in-cheek humorous manner. His work was heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting.

31 THINGS WE NOW OWN: WE KNOW WHAT POP ART LOOKS LIKE.
WE KNOW WHY POP ART BECAME AN ARTISTIC MOVEMENT. WE OWN SOME NEW TERMINOLOGY ABOUT POP ART. WE KNOW ABOUT 3 ARTISTS OF THE ERA AND HOW TO RECOGNIZE THEIR INDIVIDUAL STYLES. WE CAN EVEN DETERMINE IF ART WAS INSPIRED BY 1 OF THESE ARTISTS! NOW…LET’S LOOK AT WHAT YOU CAN CREATE!

32 Pop Art Project Agenda in the style of WARHOL
First, fold your paper in half twice so that once it is opened you have 4 equal sections in which to draw. Next, Decide on what object you want to draw and repeat it 4 times (once in each block). You may want to draw it on a piece of scratch paper once and then trace it into the 4 blocks to ensure consistency. If you do not want to repeat the same thing 4 times, choose 4 Pop Art/ Commercialism related subjects. Draw and outline your object. Color/ paint using BRIGHT colors (POP ART COLORS!). Channel your inner Warhol!
