The Basics of Frequency Distribution: (Categorical Data)
Categorical Data: information that deals with labels and results from a variable that asks for a quality. Examples of Categorical Data: Last names, grades, television networks, ratings, etc. Frequency Distribution: a summary of data displaying how often a category showed up.
2
Step 1: Enter the relevant data into a single column in Excel.
Here you are working on Exercise 6a in section 2-1. To open a WebFile, in Aplia, click on the Course Materials tab, then click on WebFiles, then the appropriate chapter.
3
Step 2: Make a separate column labeled with the variable.
List the variables in their own lines below that title. Make a column for your category: Frequency (or Relative Frequency or Percent Frequency).
4
Example of Step 3: COUNTIF is a function that will count the number of times the network ABC (the value in cell C2) shows up in the first column (data listed in A2:A26).
5
Step 4: Drag the lower right corner of that box, and it will extend the same formula down the column applying it to each specific category.
