1 Up-cycling, Recycling, & New Technology: How to Use Design and Art to Influence STEAM Activities
Woodruff Arts Center Educator Conference Presented by Hannah Maharaj June 9th, 2016

2 Hannah Hannah Maharaj STEM Coordinator DeKalb County School District

3 Introductions Name School or School District Position
What you are expecting to learn today?

4 Objectives To gain an understanding of STEAM
Understand how STEM and STEAM are connected and the purpose of both Tour museum to select a analyze works of art Work with 3Doodlers & Up-cycled Materials Create a design and lesson plan template inspired from a work of art

5 STEM and STEAM Use sketch paper and colored pencils to create a picture of anything you want.

6 STEM and STEAM What is the first thing you did to start the drawing process? What were the sequential steps in order to complete the drawing?

7 STEM and STEAM How does the art creation process compare to the Engineering Design Process?

8 The Origins of STEAM STEAM is a movement championed by Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals. The objectives of the STEAM movement are to: transform research policy to place Art + Design at the center of STEM encourage integration of Art + Design in K–20 education influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation

9 Let’s Explore RISD

10 What would the world be without STEAM?

11 With STEAM. . .

12 Goal: Locate Items on the Scavenger Hunt Sheet & Complete the Table
Finding the “A” in STEM As part of this activity participants will explore The High Art Museum for Engineering Processes Participants will have 30 minutes to conduct this activity During this time the goal is to locate items found on the Scavenger Hunt Sheet Once groups return from the Scavenger Hunt have them share the works of art the observed under each area Goal: Locate Items on the Scavenger Hunt Sheet & Complete the Table

13 Framing a Lesson from Works of Art
Select one work of art that you observed on the Scavenger Hunt Using the “STEM to STEAM Lesson Frame” outline a lesson that you will implement at your school related to the work of art you observed. Discuss with groups the different materials used to create the works of art they observed Then have participants share the steps they believe the artists took to create a particular work of art. For this activity use the 3D printed dress by Iris Van Herpen Once they have shared these steps, circle the common terms that align with an engineering design process (look for common words such as brainstorm, design, create, materials, ect) Discuss with participants how these common terms align with words that we find in an Engineering Design Model. Have participants work on the attached “STEM to STEAM Lesson Frame” sheet that aims to connect a piece of work they observed to a lesson in the classroom. Provide participants with 25 minutes to complete this activity.

14 Build & Create Design Ideas
Have groups build/create design ideas
