The Concept Senehasa is a concept of Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, former President of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU, ). (A Ladies Club, under the leadership of the wife of the reigning Commander of the Army) This is a first such concept emerged in Sri Lanka

Establishment During the civil war in Sri Lanka many military officers, soldiers had to stay a long time away from their family. The result of this situation was very drastic to their families.

Establishment Commander of SLA and Mrs. Fonseka discussed with the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), not only to establish a school, but also a Centre to support and provide necessary information to the field of SEN.

Establishment Then the SERRIC was established, under the Sri Lanka Army, to fulfil the needs, dreams and aspirations of children with special needs education of military families.

Mission Provide an equal platform to children.
Provide educational, spiritual, clinical and professional assistance for the development of children.

Mission Create opportunities and open access for children to learn, grow and develop their skills and strengths while ensuring quality education, social opportunities and independent living. Create an environment conducive for research.

SERRIC family Approximately 700 children including, blind, low vision, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, multiple disabilities etc. However, SERRIC is able to provide academic services to approximately 150 children and in house accommodation for 40 children as per the need of them.

SERRIC Educational Programme
On 5th of March 2012, started first education programme with 10 teachers and 38 children with SEN, and currently it serves more than 150 children

SERRIC Approaches SERRIC believes that equality and fullest participation is essential in developing an inclusive society. We offer diverse, fun filled activities for children and resource, research and information base for parents, caregiver, academics and research personnel.

Also now the services of SERRIC has been extended to the other forces such as Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Police as well. From this year, a policy decision has taken to admit 15% of children from the civil society.

Future plans of SERRIC SERRIC is looking forward to continue professional development for our staff to work effectively with children, youth, and young adults representing a wide range of abilities and disabilities, experiences, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, attitudes, and expectations.

Future plans of SERRIC Therefore we need to develop their competencies, and we invite the international community to support us. Implement the concept of “Lama Gammana” (Children’s Village), out of Colombo to facilitate the regional families of SERRIC.
