2 Mathematical mindsets
Imagine your students joyfully immersed in really hard math problems. Imagine them begging to have their mistakes discussed in front of the class. Imagine them saying, “I am a math person!” This utopian vision is happening in classrooms around the world, and as you follow the advice in this book, you may well see it happening in your classroom too. Carol Dweck (viii:2016) Students have such strong and often negative ideas about math that they can develop a growth mindset about everything else in their life but still believe that you can either achieve highly in maths or you can’t. To change these damaging beliefs, students need to develop mathematical mindsets, ….. Jo Boaler (x:2016) Mathematical Mindsets

3 Why is this important to students?
Teaching them how they learn will give them confidence to learn Build self esteem Help them identify that effort and not ability is linked to achievement Practise makes perfect

4 Fixed vs Growth mindset

5 A fixed mindset comes from the belief that your qualities are carved in stone – who you are is who you are, period. Characteristics such as intelligence, personality, and creativity are fixed traits, rather than something that can be developed. A growth mindset comes from the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through effort. Yes, people differ greatly – in aptitude, talents, interests, or temperaments - but everyone can change and grow through application and experience.

16 Your Task – Work in Pairs
Choose a question. Cut it out. Stick it on your A4 paper. Answer it using boxing up. Each pair should aim to complete two questions so that you all have an example to stick in your Maths books. You may end up doing the same question twice when it is your turn to train someone else.

17 Rules for Explaining You can tell them what each box is for but you should ask them what goes inside. Try not to give any answers, try to get the answers from them through questioning. Be supportive / positive.

The diagrams below show a rectangle and a parallelogram. Kylie uses a piece of string to measure the perimeter of a shape. The string fits exactly round a rectangle 10cm by 8cm. She then fits it exactly round a square. How long is one side of the square? Sara had £50 to spend on a day trip to France. The exchange rate was ε 1.55 = £1 How many Euros did she get in exchange for her £50? She saw a watch she liked priced at ε43. How much was the watch to the nearest penny? 3.7cm 3.7cm 6.1cm 6.1cm Calculate the area of the rectangle. Explain why the area of the parallelogram is equal to the area of the rectangle.
