NGSS and STEM Training Beyond the Kit
Water Planet NGSS and STEM Training Beyond the Kit
2
Inside the Training Purpose is to extend the use WATER PLANET kit.
Simple Activities and Materials We are all at different levels of proficiency with NGSS/STEM Use WATER PLANET kit as a base to add STEM activities and NGSS aligned activities. Incorporate Science and Engineering Practices This is not a training for teaching WATER PLANET Share Resources-Inspire Creativity This kit does a great job as it is. Meets SEP’s in many respects, gaps are in the NGSS standards addressed.

These practices come from the Next Generation Science Standards and are to serve as a guide for science instruction. 5th Grade focuses especially on using models and engaging in argument from data.
5
Our goal is to create engaging hands-on activities related to the Water Planet topics while integrating the subjects of science technology engineering and math.
6
The engineering design process is a series of steps engineers use to find solutions to real world problems. Everyone is an engineer. There are multiple solutions to problems. NGSS-Engineering Design ETS 1-Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

Section teaches about condensation, precipitation, and evaporation as part of the water cycle.
Water is limited. All the water on earth is called the earth’s hydrosphere and it interacts with the geosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. NGSS 5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact 5-ESS2-2. Describe and graph the amounts and percentages of water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.

Water Tower STEM Challenge Use along with the Engineering Design Process Challenge: Your city is aware of the water shortage and has been given the task of building the tallest water tower that can store the most water possible without collapsing. Set Up: Groups of 2-4 Criteria: must hold at least 25 ml of water, must be at least 10 cm tall Constraints: 50 craft sticks, tape is for joint assembly, only 20 minutes time Materials: craft sticks, tape, measuring stick, graduated cylinder, cup/lid, water

Weather and the Impact it has on the Atmosphere and Geosphere
Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact. [Clarification Statement: **The geosphere, hydrosphere (including ice), atmosphere, and biosphere are each a system and each system is a part of the whole Earth System. Examples could include the influence of the ocean on ecosystems, landform shape, and climate; the influence of the atmosphere on landforms and ecosystems through weather and climate; and the influence of mountain ranges on winds and clouds in the atmosphere. The geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are each a system.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to the interactions of two systems at a time.] Weather and the Impact it has on the Atmosphere and Geosphere
