1
Organization of the Human Body
2
Cellular Organization
Cells Basic unit of structure and function Cells tend to be specialized Bone cell, Blood cell, Muscle cell Tissues Group of cells that perform a single function 4 types Epithelial (interior/exterior of body surface) Connective (provides support: bone cell, blood cell, fat cell) Nervous (nerve impulses are transmitted) Muscle (cause movement of the body)
3
Cellular Organization Cont.
Organs Group of different tissues that work together to perform a function Example: Eye Composed of: epithelial, nervous, muscle and connective tissue. Function: Sight Organ Systems Group of organs that perform closely related function Example: Digestive System Composed of: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, rectum
4
Cellular Hierarchy
5
Homeostasis Most organ systems strive for Homeostasis Homeostasis
Maintain a controlled, stable internal environment Relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain despite changes in the internal/external environment. Example
7
Metabolism The sum of all chemical reactions in the body
The reactions that take place to maintain homeostasis. Ex. Breaking down of glycogen into glucose to increase sugar in the blood.
