Do Now: In the poem, The Road Not Taken, what does Robert Frost mean by the word diverged? Two Roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be the one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
2
Do Now: While watching the following clip, answer the following:
What happens at: Convergent boundaries: Divergent boundaries: Transform boundaries: What features can you find at:
3
Turn and Talk: If the word was converge, what might the meaning be?
Example: The crowd converged on the movie star”.
4
Learning Objective: I will be able to identify and explain the 3 types of plate boundaries.
5
Success Criteria: I can use the ESRT to identify plate boundaries.
I can explain the 3 types of plate boundaries. I can provide real world examples for each plate boundary.
6
When 2 plates meet… On what page of the ESRT can we find this
information?
7
Convergent Boundaries
Two types of Convergent Boundaries: 1. Subduction: more dense plate goes underneath the less dense plate. Subduction Subduction
8
Convergent Boundaries: Subduction
Features that occur: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Ocean Trench Remember: “The Ocean floor is going DOWN!!!!”
9
Example Mt. St. Helens- Juan de Fuca plate goes under the North American Plate.
10
Convergent Boundaries
2. Collision: 2 plates are the same material. When they hit, they both buckle up. THIS MAKES MOUNTAINS! Features: Earthquakes, Folded Mountains
11
Example Mt. Everest, Himalayas
The plates are still colliding and gaining Elevation What are some forces of nature that keep Everest from getting much higher?
12
Did we get it? The block diagram below shows the boundary between two tectonic plates. Which type of plate boundary is shown? (1) divergent (2) convergent (3) transform (4) complex
13
Divergent Boundaries When two plates move apart.
14
Divergent Boundary Features: On continents: In oceans:
Rift Valley, Volcanoes, Earthquakes In oceans: Mid-Ocean Ridge, Volcanoes, Earthquakes
15
Examples: Great Rift Valley, Africa Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Atlantic Ocean
16
Example: Great Rift Valley, Africa
17
Did we get it? The block diagram below shows the boundary between two tectonic plates. Which type of plate boundary is shown? (1) divergent (2) convergent (3) transform (4) complex
18
Sliding/Transform Boundary
When two plates slide past each other. Features: Earthquakes
19
Example: California- Pacific Plate slides past the North American Plate at the San Andreas Fault.
20
Example: San Andreas Fault Where is it?
21

22
Summary: Describe the 3 types of plate boundaries.
