Exploring models of peer mentoring in support of student placement experience Daniela Hawryliuk April 2016

2 LEAD Project To design and pilot an undergraduate peer mentoring placement advisory scheme for students in DNBE which aims to involve students, academics and non-academic staff in co-design, delivery and evaluation of the scheme support mentees to explore and articulate their skills and attributes, develop career aspirations, consider a  range of career pathways and apply for placement/ work experience opportunities enhance mentors employability by undertaking mentor training, participating in the scheme and providing eligibility to apply for a Hallam Award provide a peer learning methodology for use or adaptation in other subject disciplines

4 A Spectrum of Student Responses
I chose this course partly because I don't know what I want to do as a career...employers are not looking for geography student... I can't really say what skills I have/am developing on the course...I don't know where to start looking... Human Geography Student Employers are always looking for Quantity Surveyors...the money is good...there's a lot of choice of employers/types of projects you can work on... I'm applying to global companies engaged in infrastructure projects... Quantity Surveying Student

5 Career & Placement Support in DNBE
Advice and activities embedded in PPD programmes - but PPD tutor advice and enthusiasm is variable! Pro-active careers advisor developing innovative activities - but a big department and wide range of disciplines to cover Good co-ordination between placement team and key academics Annual DNBE Careers Day Placement and work experience undertaken by students is no longer credit bearing in new suite of programmes

For students studying vocational and non- vocational courses at all levels to meet employers, professional bodies and fellow students to investigate a variety of career options For students to explore and apply for placement and graduate opportunities For employers to meet students, to raise company profiles and to promote placement and graduate roles to a targeted audience Activities Prepare for the booklet and workshop sessions Careers & Employers Exhibition - Over 60 stands Student Panel Discussion - See Film Careers Speed Dating Workshops

Students provide advice as well as employers/prof. bodies. Speaker provide overview of organisation/sector, career opportunities, top tips on how to break into the sector, what students can do whilst at university to help themselves, they also discuss their own career history and encourage students to ask questions.

8 Key Project Activities
Using LEAD Associate funding - recruit two DNBE students as researchers & co-designers to work with me in May & June Student research activity will include interviewing SHU staff involved with current peer mentoring activities engaging staff in the department interviewing students about the scheme design contributing to scheme design Scheme launch at NBE Careers Day 8th Nov 2017.

Careers Mentoring Scheme Peer Mentoring Scheme Psychology Dept. Hallam Award Culture Connect SHU Careers Mentoring Scheme - Running for 12 months led by Louise Harrison as part of the Careers Service. Scheme pairs up students industry mentors it's been running for 12 months.

10 Workshop Questions 1 What are your experiences of similar models of student peer support activities/schemes? 2 What factors should we consider when designing and piloting the scheme? Who else needs to be involved? 3 What activities should we incorporate into the design of the pilot scheme? 4 What would a successful scheme look like? How would we know if it has been successful (measuring and evaluating)?
