IIASA is building access to community tools, databases, resources and programs for the NMO community.
This includes shared platform for IIASA models to develop, test, and share modeling tool information within the community.
IIASA hosts a number of key databases, including the RCP, SSP, and Global Energy Assessment Scenarios databases to share with the community.
IIASA has been a key member in international negotiations and agreements. IIASA is in an unique role to coordinate and deliver science policy advice.
Additionally, IIASA has the YSSP and increasing their postdoc programs, but share capacity building with the NMO community could include shared appointments for research staff at IIASA and research institutions in member countries. Additionally, IIASA has been working on establishing an International School of Excellence for Systems Analysis and Systems Science (ISE) with the focus of building and developing a global network of next generation systems scientists and thinkers.

7. Establish new multilateral scientific relationships and contributing to your country’s soft power through science diplomacy.
Ranging from the original reason for establishing IIASA as a scientific bridge between the USA and USSR at the height of the cold war
IIASA RAINS model was used in international treaty in which 33 European countries agreed to implement an international treaty. By 2010, that agreement led to a decrease in sulfur dioxide emissions in Europe by 60%. Thanks to IIASA GAINS model, the European Commission introduced in 2013 a new clean air policy package to reduce pollution and expected to avoid 58,000 premature deaths, save 123,000km2 of land from nitrogen pollution, and protect 19,000km2 of forest from acidification by 2030.
Today, China, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States are collaborating on a holistic integrative assessment of plausible futures for the Arctic.
And researchers and policymakers from Austria, EU, Finland, Germany, Russia jointly analyzing challenges and opportunities for greater economic integration in Eurasia.

8. SO HOW CAN WE ENSURE YOU MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF YOUR IIASA MEMBERSHIP?
IIASA recognizes that we could do more to ensure that NMOs maximize the value of their IIASA membership.
So we have added a new external relations, to the newly-formed External Relations, Communications, and Library Department. We have added additional staff, including me, to work on NMO relations.

9. MAPPING IIASA’S CURRENT VALUE TO MEMBER COUNTRIES
One thing we are doing is developing a NMO relations management system to provide IIASA staff and NMOs with easy access to high quality information on activities and collaborations.
Included in this are these info sheets that show recent and current activities, they show strengths and can be used to identify areas of weaknesses and gaps where you’d expect some collaboration to be happening. Along with the slide pack, they can be shown to stakeholders in your countries (e.g. the heads of your organizations, the ministries or departments that fund your organization).

11. DEVELOPING RELATIONS WITH NEW RESEARCH PARTNERS
International collaboration is increasing and participation in international research collaboration is associated with highly effective researchers. IIASA has a global network—this figure shows research partners, formal and informal in NMOs-which is over 700.
Research partners in NMO countries, we use Memorandums of Understanding to initiate new relations with strategically important partners. Many of these partners are current partners on research projects, joint publications, joint events and joint model development
One challenge of research network are that the research parties are diverse-some more connected to the NMO than others so need to work with NMOs to appropriately manage and miantain comprehensive member country research network.

16. ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Fourth Stage: Review strategic plan, including progress, achievements, and uncompleted items. Begin process to formalize the next five-year strategic plan.
First Stage: Understand opportunities and barriers; research and science policy goals and priorities; and detail potential IIASA- NMO shared goals and activities.

Third Stage: After two and a half years, communicate on progress, any changes, and agree on a modified plan, if necessary. Staff level visit to the country to discuss the plan and potentially host a joint IIASA-NMO event.
At the same time as developing the engagement strategy, IIASA needs to support new NMOs to become effective bridges between IIASA and their country
Second Stage: Develop a five- year strategic plan. An official visit to the country to have IIASA Director General and CEO and NMO Chair formally sign the plan.
