4 Absolute Value In Section 1.3, we saw that the absolute value of a number x, written 𝒙 , represents the undirected distance from x to 0 on a number line. For example, the solutions of |x| = 4 are 4 and ο€­4, as shown below. We need to understand the concept of absolute value in order to solve equations or inequalities involving absolute values.
