1 Poetry Analysis: Narrative, Ballad, Sonnet, and Lyrical
BALLAD ANALYSIS: Randall: Ballad: Define: “The Ballad of Birmingham” READ the article: UPI News Report of Birmingham Church Bomb Write one main idea for each paragraph in the article. Go to: CLICK on See the Video and watch/listen. This is the ballad/originally a song. GOOGLE: Ballad of Birmingham Poetry Foundation Use the poem to answer the POETIC DEVICE Questions below: List FOUR poetic devices used in the poem and an example for each. In a paragraph, express how Randall establishes mood/emotion through his words. How is emotion expressed through the mother/daughter scenerio? Quote specific lines from text that are emotionally appealing.

What are the metaphors used to compare his love? Woman’s love? Rewrite each line in your own words…What is the writer trying to say to his audience?

3 Shakespearian Sonnet Analysis:
Read/Listen to Shakespeare’s Sonnet #29: “When in Disgrace with Fortune and Men’s Eyes” Google/Search: Answer the POETIC DEVICE questions below: What does the speaker complain about in the first part of the sonnet? Write down the line where the speaker’s mood changes. Why does his mood change? Re-read only the last two lines again. How do these lines prove the theme of the poem? Find and explain at least three poetic devices.

4 Italian Sonnet Analysis:
Google/Search: poetryoutloud.org SCROLL to the Italian Sonnet by William Wordsworth: “The World is Too Much With Us” Google/Search: and find the poem; use it to answer the POETIC DEVICE questions below: What is the rhyme scheme of the sonnet? What problem does the speaker address in the first part of the sonnet? Write down the line where the speaker attempts to solve the problem. What is the solution? Lines 8-14 contain a few allusions. What are these allusions, and what image is the poet trying to convey to us by using these specific allusions? NOW: Write a Shakespearian Sonnet about someone that means a lot to you…can include pets OR someone that makes you angry/sad. 6 One Poem, Different Meanings Analysis: Many poems have varying interpretations from
person to person…..AND, as long as those persons support their opinions with evidence from the text. GOOGLE/SEARCH: Search: “The Road Not Taken” By Robert Frost Read and listen to the poem and answer the POETIC DEVICE questions BELOW: Summarize what is happening in the poem. Where is the speaker? What is he doing? What symbolism do you find in the poem? Use evidence to support your answers One interpretation is the speaker is choosing not to follow the crowd. Find THREE lines from the poem that support this interpretation. Another interpretation is that it doesn’t really matter which road the speaker chooses- because the two choices seem to be equal. Find several lines that support this view. Write a paragraph based on the interpretation you support. Back it up with evidence from the text. Find a video clip/song/that has a similar theme as the poem. Support your findings with evidence from the poem and choice of video or song.

9 Poetry in Lyrics (music) Analysis:
Define: Lyric: GOOGLE:Find the lyrics for the song: ROAR by Katy Perry Answer the POETIC DEVICE Questions BELOW: Find and explain THREE poetic devices Determine the rhyme scheme for one verse. When the lyrics say, “I got the eye of the tiger,” that phrase is an allusion to another song and is also a metaphor. What is the meaning of the song alluded to in ROAR? What does the metaphor mean? Google: Find the lyrics for the song: One More Night by Adam Levine What poetic device is used in the line, “Got you stuck on my body, on my body, like a tattoo?” What poetic device is used in the line, “And I know I said it a million times?” Now that you know some songs are poetry, choose any song (clean version) and analyze it: Find and explain THREE POETIC DEVICES used throughout the song. Support with text. Quiz another student and see what they think….
