2. PBIS Philosophy
We do not discipline students for not knowing what to do.
Not knowing how to do it, or
Lacking the personal skills to manage their own behavior.

3. What is PBIS?
A research–based initiative that is being used nationally in general and special education.
It is a proactive and positive approach used by all to promote successful behavior and learning.

4. PBIS Promotes Reduction of behavior concerns.
Learning replacement behaviors.
Reduction in crisis intervention.

5. 3 Tier System of Support
Tier I: Our universal behavior support program should meet the needs of 80% of our students (preventing problem behavior)
Tier II: 15% of students will need extra support
Tier III: 5% of our students will require intensive support based on an FBA/BIP to focus on the current problem behavior.

8. Gotcha Program
When students are following the 3 expectations (3 G’s), they may randomly earn a “Gotcha” ticket which they can redeem weekly for prizes from the Panther Store.

10. PBIS Store
Wednesdays are PBIS store days. Parent volunteers operate the store.
Prize donations are greatly appreciated.

11. PBIS Monthly Assemblies
Each month a different theme is highlighted (playground rules, bus behavior, safety, etc.)
Assembly activities include: PBIS songs, Cheer Team, social stories, student role plays, recognition of students of the month, and staff Gotcha awards.

12. Staff Gotcha Awards
Staff Gotcha awards can be given by anyone, including colleagues and parents, to recognize any employee (teachers, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, etc…) for their positive contributions to Peters School.

13. Pride Wall
A Student of the Month from each classroom is displayed on the Pride Wall.
The Student of the Month will be highlighted at our monthly assemblies.
A pride wall postcard will be sent home to the parents.

14. Behavioral Expectation Matrix
A matrix for appropriate school behaviors was developed for all locations throughout the school. Specific rules were identified for each of the 3 expectations (3 G’s)

Rule Posters are displayed in appropriate areas throughout the school.
Students learn and practice the rules at the various locations.
Each classroom displays their own rule poster specific to their unique needs.

As a parent of an SXI child, I was skeptical of the PBS “Gotcha” program at Glen Peters.  I assumed that it was something developed for the MoCI students who could better understand the rewards they were receiving for positive behavior and that the SCI and SXI students were being included in the program as a courtesy.  Most children (impaired or not) are capable and expected to perform the 3 behaviors that are required to receive a “Gotcha” (listening, making choices, showing compassion).  But for some of our children with special needs, these behaviors are often difficult and very challenging.   So when my daughter came home with her first “Gotcha”, I was overjoyed and completely overwhelmed by the pride I felt for her.  It told me that not only was she being positively recognized as an individual (amongst a group of peers), but she was also demonstrating behavior that made a positive impact in some way.  So while some people may feel as though the “Gotchas” are a waste of time or pointless with the children that do not understand the recognition, I implore you to look further and realize the positive and prideful impact it can have on those that love and care for those children.  See beyond the prize they receive and be proud of the challenge they overcame that day.

The PBS program at Glen Peters School has created a unified effort of recognizing students for making good choices, being a good friend and being a good listener. Students wear their GOTCHAs with pride and enjoy telling others in the building how they earned their GOTCHA. The student of the month board has been a great way to showcase student’s positive behaviors. It has been a wonderful tool for inviting parents and families to the building to see their student’s achievements. The success of our program would not be possible without the wonderful parent volunteers that run the GOTCHA store. Students look forward to their weekly visit. Their time and efforts have created a consistent reward system that our students can easily access and participate in. The staff at Glen Peters has made a collective effort to make this program a success.
