1 Production of power and valuable chemical feed stock with integrated CO2 capture
B.G.B. Solheim, D. Bokach, M. Hempel, C. Ilea, A. Vik Prototech, AS, Fantoftveien 38, 5072, Bergen, Norway Test Equipment Introduction The production of hydrogen by pyrolysis of methane can be described as CH4C(s)+2H2. Pyrolysis of hydrocarbons in combination with fuel cells present an unique opportunity for production of power with fossil hydrocarbons while either eliminating production of CO2 or creating a pure stream of CO2 for storage. 1.Co-production of hydrogen and electricity with CO2 capture with CH4  C + 2H2, C + CO2  2CO, 2CO+O2  CO2 + el giving a net CH4  2H2 + el + CO2 ; total theoretical efficiency > 90% 2. Electricity production where H2 is used as fuel in the SOFC with 2H2 + O2  2H2O + el giving a net CH4  el + H2O + CO2 ; electrical theoretical efficiency 75% Scope: main purpose is to utilize natural gas (NG) for power production and co-production of hydrogen while capturing CO2 in the process. Innovation 1: Development of a cyclic reactor based on a tubular design alternating between a pyrolysis mode where carbon is deposited and a gasification mode where CO2 is injected through the deposited carbon and CO is produced to be used as fuel in a SOFC Innovation 2: Development of a continuously operating pyrolysis reactor based on a granted Prototech patent Inspired by Life Support System Alternative Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative (MELiSSA) - for long term manned space missions days trip to Mars for 6 crew members System Flexibility (high power efficiency): a. Electricity + CO2 (pure stream ready for storage) b. Electricity + H2 + CO2 (pure stream ready for storage) c. Electricity + H2 + carbon d. Electricity + syngas e. Electricity and other synthetic products Remarks The authors would like to thank the Norwegian Research Council which funded the work under the project number ”Production of power and valuable chemical feed stock with integrated CO2 capture”.
