Having learned how to say different languages in Korean, teachers can now elaborate on that by adding “~할 수 있어요? [hal-su-i-sseo-yo?] Can you speak~?” which literally means “Can you do~?”. Please use the next four slides to practise this phrase with different languages. To ask someone if he/she can speak Korean, students simply need to say the word, “한국어 [han-gu-geo] Korean language” followed by the phrase “~할 수 있어요? [hal-su-i-sseo-yo] Can you speak~?”. 한국어 할 수 있어요? [han-gu-geo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo?] Can you speak Korean? To make it easier for students to learn the phrase, teachers could mention the following sentence structure or word order. In English: can you speak + language? In Korean: language + can you speak? Remember to tell your students to raise the tone at the end to make it a question. Once you know how to ask someone if he/she can speak Korean, it is easy learn to how to answer the question as Koreans use the same form for both questioning and answering. 한국어 할 수 있어요. han-gu-geo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo. I can speak Korean. As the only difference is the tone at the end of the phrase, simply say the same phrase with no raising tone. Practise the same with different languages using the next three slides. 영어 할 수 있어요. [yeong-eo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo] I can speak English. 중국어 할 수 있어요. [jung-gu-geo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo] I can speak Chinese. 일본어 할 수 있어요. [il-bo-neo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo] I can speak Japanese. Once students get used to saying both the interrogative and declarative forms, move on to say it with “네 [ne] Yes”. “네 [ne] Yes” was covered previously in the DISCOVER KOREAN - Additional Language Component #1. 네, 한국어 할 수 있어요. ne, han-gu-geo-hal-su-i-sseo-yo. Having learned how to say “Yes, I can speak Korean.”, students now get to learn how to say “No, I can’t speak + (language).” using the phrase “못 해요 [mo-tae-yo] I can’t speak~?” which literally means “I can’t do~.” 한국어 못 해요. Han-gu-geo-mo-tae-yo I can’t speak Korean. The next slides are provided to practise this phrase with different languages.
