As the most important city in colonial America, Philadelphia has a rich history. The declaration of Independence was signed in the city's state house, now the Independence Hall. 4 The Independence Hall The Independence Hall is one of the most important historical landmarks in the United States. Major steps towards independence were taken here by delegates of the English colonies, amongst them George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Independence Hall

5 The Liberty Bell The Liberty Bell is one of the most important symbols of America's struggle for independence at the end of the eighteenth century. The famously cracked bell occupies a separate pavilion at the Independence Mall and can be visited free of charge. Liberty Bell Center

Philadelphia's City Hall is the largest, tallest and most expensive of all city halls in the United States. In 1987 One Liberty Place dethroned the Philadelphia City Hall as the tallest building in the city.

7 The Museum of Art The Museum of Art in Philadelphia is one of the country's largest museums. Its collection of some 300,000 works of art covers diverse artistic areas.

11 Masonic Temple Philadelphia's Masonic Temple, one of the city's most interesting architectural gems, is the home of The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania. Many of America's Founding Fathers were Freemasons.

Proposed by Alexander Hamilton, the First Bank of the United States stands amid Philadelphia's other historic landmarks.

14 The Drake The Drake was built in 1929 as a luxurious hotel. The brick and terra-cotta skyscraper is arguably the most magnificent of the many high-rises that were built in Philadelphia during the skyscraper boom of the 1920s.

15 Irish Memorial A tribute to Philadelphia's large Irish population, the Irish Memorial remembers those who died in the Irish famine of the nineteenth century.
