1 What is Science? Mrs. Corley River Springs Elementary
Introduction to Science August 2014

a. Turn and talk to your neighbor for one minute and try to come up with an answer to this question. Be ready to share when the timer goes off. b. Write your answer in your notebook. c. Now, let’s share your thoughts. d. After listening to the various answers, write a new answer to the question. Highlight any changes you made to your answer in yellow. How did your thinking change after listening to everyone’s answer? Let’s look at what the experts say science is. After studying what we all have to say, let’s write an answer as a class!

3 What does a scientist look like?
You have 20 minutes to draw yourself as a scientist on the second page of your Science Notebook. If you finish before the 20 minutes is up, brainstorm what you think a scientist does.

4 Famous Scientists Albert Einstein: invented a refrigerator! Isaac Newton: investigated laws of motion (an object in motion stays in motion unless it is stopped by a force. You are riding your bike downhill until you hit a rock, what happens? See!) Benjamin Franklin: Discovered electricity, invented bifocals, and the wood burning stove.

5 Sir Isaac Newton Video We will experience how the prism turns light into a multitude of colors we study light!

6 Science Acrostic After talking and reading about what the experts say about science and scientists, let’s brainstorm a list of about 20 words that we think describe science or what scientists do. Then we’ll see if we can create an acrostic to help us summarize our understanding about science.

7 Acrostic Format S_____________________________
Once you have brainstormed a list of words, think about how you can use those words to explain what you know about science using the acrostic format below. S_____________________________ C_____________________________ I______________________________ E______________________________ N______________________________ C______________________________

8 My Acrostic Scientists ask questions Collect observations and Information through Experiments while Noting their results in Charts and graphs or Even anecdotal notes
