Portrait of Promise before Monday Portrait of Promise before Wednesday Portrait of Promise before Friday Conclusions today First draft of personal narrative due tomorrow Final draft due on Friday

4 Diagnostic Do not be alarmed by your grades.
You received a grade for each major part of the rubric. The grades show what you should improve upon for your personal narrative. Grades for language use ranged from B’s to F’s. Many people need to work on introductions and conclusions.

5 Introductions Review: What are the key words from the rubric?

6 Introductions Review the rubric.
The key words are framing and orientation. In your personal narratives you provide framing by making your setting specific and introducing the main character. You provide orientation by hinting at what the problem will be. This might be challenging because you need to keep your essay in chronological order.

7 Introductions A few people have sent me introductions. Remember that introductions must stay in chronological order. The earliest point in your story is the first point in your introduction.

8 Conclusions Review the rubric.
Keywords: Ending; thoughtful; not summary The conclusion of your personal narrative will probably bring your story up to the present. Don’t end with a cliché. Cliché: Family is the most importtant thing. Appropriate given your expertise and evidence: I learned that I believe that family is the most important thing for me.

9 Portrait of Promise You were assigned to read the following sections:
Income security Food security and nutrition Child development and education Housing All of these sections are about things that are necessary for health but that are not accessible for many people in California.

10 Portrait of Promise You will have a short in-class writing assignment today. I will assign you to one of the sections. Explain one way in which the total population of California is segmented in your section. Your explanation should name the different segments and how the different segments have different access to the topic of your section. Provide the page number or numbers in parentheses. Example with housing.

11 Portrait of Promise Housing (39) Ability to purchase a home in 2014
33% of households could afford a median-priced home 67% of households could not afford a median-priced home Turn this in before you leave today, tomorrow, or it to me before class tomorrow.

12 Workshop Tomorrow is the workshop for your first draft.
You should have at least three pages of your first draft finished. If you do not finish all of the points on your outline put the remaining points at the end of your draft. Before the workshop you should start evaluating your own essay according to the workshop rubric. The workshop rubric is available on the course web site.

13 Workshop me if you need an extension. We should be able to do workshops on Friday while other people are doing journal assignments. People who need an extension should turn in the final draft on Monday. Even if you get an extension you will need to do the in-class writing assignment tomorrow.

14 Homework Turn in your in-class assignment or e-mail it to me.
See me: Reyner, Jennifer, Cipriano See me if you have not had your outline approved. Workshop tomorrow: Bring either a hard copy or a laptop that your partner can use to read your essay.
