This supplies a sense of being far away from or close to the subject of the frame.
The distance refers to the type of shot:
1. Extreme long shot /establishing shot the human is barley visible. It sometimes used to establish and re establish setting.

It increases the information we have about what is going on in the image
It can act as a substitute for our movement
