Goal of BEST… Build a system of SUPPORT for teachers new to the profession!

5 BEST Definitions First-Year Teacher: A new teacher with 179 days or fewer in a continuous, certificated teaching assignment in public or private schools anywhere in the United States. Teachers who have more than 179 days of substitute teacher experience are eligible for funding as a first- year teacher provided that this experience did not include a single continuous assignment as a certificated teacher for more than 179 days. Second-Year Teacher: An individual with 180 days to 359 days of experience in a continuous, certificated teaching assignment as a certificated teacher in public or private schools anywhere in the United States.

6 BEST Funding Based on a per NEW TEACHER or SECOND YEAR TEACHER count
NEW TEACHERS… District receives $1000 per new teacher Use of the funds are to support the BEST grant activities Examples… Mentor stipends, travel, sub costs, PD registration, etc. SECOND Year Teachers… District receives $500 per second year teacher

For your first year teachers and their mentors ***Second year teacher requirements are decreased by half***

The DISTRICT/SCHOOL (administration or leadership team) will… EARLY ON Identify the right district LEAD Communicate and coordinate the work at the district level Identify a mentor for first-year and second-year teachers (max. of 2:1 mentee to mentor ratio) Mentor selection… p15-16 in the Induction Standards Pamphlet Provide the first-year teachers an “instructional” orientation reviewing the curriculum and instructional policies of the school

The DISTRICT/SCHOOL (administration or leadership team) will… ONGOING… Provide time for professional development to first-year teachers (about 18 hours) and second-year teachers (about 9 hours) Allow and encourage interactions between mentor and mentee Provide release time for mentor professional development delivered by OSPI Mentor Academy and mentor roundtables

11 Requirements of the grant…
Mentors and mentees… First day, first week, first month… Spend time together at the beginning of the year to prep! (first- and second-year teachers) Required… four feedback observations between the mentor and mentee(s) throughout the school year including at least one observation of the mentor by the mentee(s) during the school year (second-year teachers… two feedback observations) Required… weekly contact between mentor and mentee(s) (both)

Mentees… Required… About 18 hours of professional learning (about 9 for second-year) District or school led professional learning NEWESD provided professional learning Examples… TPEP, content specific, assessment, classroom management ENCOURAGED… attend with your mentor

Mentors of first- and second-year teachers… Required… Mentor Academy Required… Mentor roundtables (3 evenings in Spokane, on-line or regional)

14 NEWESD Efforts Provide an overview of the program… Webinar and site visits Coordinate and deliver BEST aligned professional development throughout the year including the mentor academy and roundtables Host a Regional Induction Roundtable on October 4th, 2017 (still need a venue) Support BEST mentors and mentees throughout the year Support BEST administrators during implementation of grant Provide logistical coordination of grant requirements and implementation Upkeep a BEST resources website with quarterly communication
