2 Aims of the lesson To continue Unit 4- Awareness of communication in Adult Social Care. Recap on previous lesson. To explore barriers to communication in Adult Social Care.

3 Recap on developing your skills and attitudes
Discuss as a group what skills are required for effective communication. What do we use more, verbal or non-verbal or verbal skills.

4 Barriers to effective communication

5 Language barriers Some people use English as a second language.
They may not be able to fully express themselves. Interpreting services. Symbols and pictures.

6 Sensory impairment We all use our senses to communicate.
Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. The loss of any sense creates a barrier to communication (i.e. hearing loss). Interpreters or sign language. Technical aids (hearing aids). Computer software. Pictures and symbols.

7 Activity In pairs, think of your 5 senses. What do you think may be some of the scenarios if you were to lose each sense. Think about how it would affect communication. Taste. Smell. Hearing. Sight. Touch.

8 Cultural differences Some people may have communication barriers related to their gender, beliefs or first language. Religion. Important to find out about a person’s culture and background as well as communication preferences.

9 Behaviour and health issues
If people are unhappy or unwell, they may behave in a certain way. This can be an effect of their symptoms. They may not be able to express their needs other than by behaviours.

10 Environmental barriers
The environment can have a significant impact on communication. Noise. Lighting. Discussing personal needs
