We will study a variety of Greek and Latin Root patterns throughout the year
Students will have daily practice and tests for these roots

4. Writing Workshop
We will be focusing on the three types of writing each quarter:
Narrative

Opinion
Writing Process
Effective Writing Skills
Grammar

5. Spelling Spelling is still on the report card.
We will use a rubric to determine your child’s “Spelling” grade. This is aligned with GCPS expectations.
Spelling grade will include all of the anchors of Word Study:
*Phonemic Awareness *Phonics
*Spelling *Vocabulary
*Handwriting *Fluency

6. Spelling Continued What parents can count on:
We will study grade level appropriate spelling patterns.
We will expect students to spell grade appropriate words (Fry Words) correctly in all writing.
There will be a heavy emphasis on applying their word study knowledge and spelling in their writing throughout the day in all curriculum areas.

7. Science
Units of study: Think like a Scientist, Water cycle, Weather, Solar system: stars, planets, constellations, seasons, moon phases, Light, Sound, Force and Motion, Simple machines, Ecosystems, and Adaptation/Survival

12. Grade Level Policy Check-out: No check outs after 2:45.
Birthdays: If your child has a birthday, please make sure to get the correct number of treats for the students in your child’s homeroom.
Please do not bring anything we need to use a knife for.

13. Grading Procedures
Any work that is graded cannot be sent home to be made up.
Tests/Quizzes
Quizzes – notice in the agenda, no study guide, use notes to prepare
Tests – Week notice (at minimum), study guide will be given and day before test review
No retakes on tests
Re-do class work
For all classwork and quiz grades which receive a 73 or below
Completed during study hall
Two scores will be averaged for final grade

14. Grading Procedures
For any assignments not turned in, a “NTI” (NTI=O) will be temporarily added into the grade book. This will be replaced once the work is turned in. This allows you to see more clearly what is not turned in. You will be able to see this on the Parent Portal.

15. Make-Up Work
If a student is absent, they will be given the work that they missed in order to insure that they stay on track with the AKS.
They will have the number of days missed to turn in their work.

16. Reporting Student Progress
Parent portal: If you have not signed up, please make sure you do before leaving.
This is how grades will be communicated with parents, no longer through .
Mid-terms will be sent home on the 5th week of each quarter.
Report cards will be sent home quarterly.

17. Promotion Requirements
Student promotion will be based on proficiency of 4th grade AKS.
We will relay any new information as it is shared with us.

18. Important Dates Conference Dates:
* September 24th Wednesday and 25th Thursday * February 25th Wednesday and 26th Thursday
Interim Testing Interim’s at the end each quarter Post tests – end of the year
Standardized Testing Dates:
* About two weeks after spring break
*We will relay any new information as we receive it.

19. Classroom Newsletters & Friday Folders
Newsletters will be posted to our website every two weeks.
Please read the newsletter each week to ensure you are aware of current events and targeted AKS.
Friday Folders are sent home on the last day of the week.
Eagle cards will communicate any concerns from the week, add comments if necessary
Multiple checks in one area (i.e. homework, controls talking) reflect more than one occurrence.

20. Behavior
When students are not following classroom expectations, checks will be recorded in their Eagle Card.
If the behavior becomes a reoccurrence, parents will be notified via note home, , or phone call.

21. What Can Parents Do?
Encourage reading and writing in every situation you can
Support students through homework, studying, projects
Keep up communication with teacher
Check agenda and homework nightly
Read the newsletter 
Volunteer for school events
Sign in with front office if visiting
