1 Aim: How do we solve fractional equations?
Do Now: Simplify (use positive exponents) (2a⁴b¯⁶)¯³(a⁸b¯⁴)⁵ 2) (combine) 3 + x x HW #1 pg 69 #7,14,15,16,19

2 Key Terms Fractional Equation Extraneous Solution
An equation containing one or more rational expressions. A solution that, when checked back into the original equation, results in a 0 denominator.

3 Two Methods: 1st Method – when we have 2 terms (proportion)
Steps: Cross – Multiply Solve for the variable Make sure result is not extraneous Example: 1) )

4 Try These: Solve 1) ) = y y –

5 Method 2 : 3 terms or more Steps:
Determine the LCD of all denominators. 2) Change all terms to the LCD - Just like with addition and subtraction 3) Once we have the same denominators – GET RID OF THE DENOMINATORS. YEA! 4) Solve for the variable. 5) Check for extraneous roots.

6 Examples: = ) x x

7 Try These: m – 3 = ) b = 17 m b b
