2 A Study of Romans

3 Our Need for a New Identity
Last Week Our Need for a New Identity

4 Recommended Resource

5 Conclusions Our search for an identity is universal.
Our natural identity only ends in death. Trying to change ourselves by dealing with external “symptoms” is a dead end. Accepting Christ leads to a new identity. Our new identity brings real change now (from the inside out). Our new identity secures eternal life.

6 How to apply the new identity
TODAY’S TEACHING How to apply the new identity

7 How to apply the new identity Becoming Who We Already Are
TODAY’S TEACHING How to apply the new identity Becoming Who We Already Are

8 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?

9 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?   “If we’re saved and grow by grace, then what motivation is there for us to resist sin and try to do good?”

10 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

11 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  Paul’s opponents couldn’t understand growth or change if it was not connected to legalism.

12 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  Paul’s response shows that growth and change must be connected to identity.

13 Romans 6 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?  “If you’re not a slave in the realm of sin anymore, then why would you live like you still were?” Paul’s response shows that growth and change must be connected to identity.

14 Romans 6 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life.

15 Romans 6 How do we walk in this new life and identity?
3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life. How do we walk in this new life and identity?

16 Romans 6 5 For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin,7 since a person who has died is freed from sin’s claims. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, 9 because

17 Romans 6 we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him. 10 For in light of the fact that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God.

18 Romans 6 we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him. 10 For in light of the fact that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God. According to the Bible, what matters most is not how I feel or what I think, but what God thinks and says is true.

19 Step One: KNOWING TRUTH
Christ died to pay for sin Because Christ died I don’t have to pay for sin IF I accept Christ, then God sees me in a perpetual state of righteousness IF I accept Christ, then I am no longer a slave in the realm of sin, but a child of God IF I accept Christ, then I now have the power to live for God

20 Step One: KNOWING TRUTH
Christ died to pay for sin Because Christ died I don’t have to pay for sin IF I accept Christ, then God sees me in a perpetual state of righteousness IF I accept Christ, then I am no longer a slave in the realm of sin, but a child of God IF I accept Christ, then I now have the power to live for God Suppose you’re mailed an envelope from a now deceased great uncle, and this envelope contains all the info for a Swiss bank account…

21 Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

22 Romans 6 This is the first command in the passage… What does it mean?
11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. This is the first command in the passage… What does it mean?

23 “I no longer am capable of sin.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I no longer am capable of sin.”

24 “I no longer am capable of sin.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I no longer am capable of sin.”

25 “I no longer want to sin.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I no longer want to sin.”

26 “I no longer want to sin.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I no longer want to sin.”

27 “I am no longer enslaved to sin.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I am no longer enslaved to sin.”

28 “I am no longer alienated from God.”
Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I am no longer alienated from God.”

29 Romans 6 “I am now ALIVE TO GOD!”
11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. “I am now ALIVE TO GOD!”

30 Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. 13 And do not present any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, present yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. 14 For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.

31 Romans 6 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, 18 and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. 19 I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.

32 Romans 6 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

33 Romans 6 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, 18 and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. 19 I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.

34 “Why the tortured language?”
Romans 6 17 But thank God that, although you used to be slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were transferred to, 18 and having been liberated from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. 19 I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented the parts of yourselves as slaves to moral impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification. “Why the tortured language?”

35 “Why not just say ‘do good’?”
“Why not just say ‘do good’?”

48 Example – Identity in Competence
"God, my desire to prove myself is so deep and controlling.  It's getting me nowhere and is actually both making a mockery of the cross and limiting my ability to love others. Thank you for your grace, and thank you that I don't have anything to prove to you because Jesus proved it all for me.  I really need your help with this issue, because I know that I can't control it completely and definitely can't do that deep internal heart change that only your Spirit can do."

49 Example – Identity in Competence
"God, my desire to prove myself is so deep and controlling.  KNOW & NAME SIN

71 Get GRACE into your heart & mind…
Colossians 1:  Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation -- 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel.

72 Get GRACE into your heart & mind…
Romans 8: Therefore, no condemnation now exists for those in Christ Jesus, 2 because the Spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did.
