3 Limited Atonement 2 Corinthians 5:14,15

4 2 Corinthians 5:14,15 “For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.”

5 Chapter III – Of God’s Decree
3. “By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and angels are predestinated or foreordained to eternal life through Jesus Christ to the praise of his glorious grace, others being left to act in their sin to their just condemnation, to the praise of his glorious justice.” 4. “These angels and men thus predestinated and foreordained are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite that it cannot be either increased or diminished” (The Philadelphia Confession of Faith, p. 21).

6 Chapter XI – Of Justification
4. “God did from all eternity decree to justify all the elect, and Christ did in the fulness of time die for their sins, and rise again for their justification; nevertheless, they are not justified personally, until the Holy Spirit doth in due time actually apply Christ unto them” (The Philadelphia Confession of Faith, p. 37).

7 Limited Atonement God Loves All

8 God Loves All 1) He is good to all.
“The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, Slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works” (Psalm 145:8,9).

9 God Loves All 2) Has no pleasure in death of wicked.
“Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?... Yet the children of your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ But it is their way which is not fair! When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it. But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it. Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his own ways” (Ezekiel 33:11,17-20).

10 God Loves All 3) His love for all.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16,17). World – “the inhabitants of the world: particularly the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human race” (Thayer, p. 357).

11 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved

12 God Wants All Saved 1) Desires the salvation of all men.
“For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3,4).

13 God Wants All Saved 2) Birth of Jesus was good news to all.
“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:8-11).

14 God Wants All Saved 3) Made salvation possible for all.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11). “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

15 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved
Christ Died For All

16 Christ Died For All 1) Jesus paid the price for all sins.
“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Timothy 2:5,6).

17 Christ Died For All 2) He died so all could live.
“For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:14,15).

18 Christ Died For All 3) Because of God’s grace toward us He died.
“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone” (Hebrews 2:9).

19 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved
Christ Died For All God Calls All

20 God Calls All 1) The Lord’s invitation is to all.
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

21 God Calls All 2) The gospel message is for all.
“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). “to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 2:14).

22 God Calls All 3) God calls all to salvation.
“And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

23 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved
Christ Died For All God Calls All Will All Be Saved?

24 Will All Be Saved? 1) Only a few will be saved.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13,14).

25 Will All Be Saved? 2) Few chosen.
“For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14).

26 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved
Christ Died For All God Calls All Will All Be Saved? Why Will Most Be Lost?

27 Why Will Most Be Lost? 1) Not everyone will obey.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:21-24).

28 Why Will Most Be Lost? 2) Few chosen.
“For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14). Called – “invited (by God in the proclamation of the Gospel) to obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom through Christ” (Thayer, p. 350). Chosen – “The cryptic saying in Mt 22:14 is to be seen in the light of the parables in Mt 21-22, where an invitation is issued to many, but those who reject it in disobedience (cf. 21:31, 43) are not chosen” (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament).

29 Why Will Most Be Lost? 3) Those for whom Christ died can be lost.
“Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died” (Romans 14:15). “And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?” (1 Corinthians 8:11).

30 Limited Atonement God Loves All God Wants All Saved
Christ Died For All God Calls All Will All Be Saved? Why Will Most Be Lost? Why Few Are Saved?

31 Why Few Will Be Saved? 1) Not everyone will believe.
“For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21).

32 Why Few Will Be Saved? 2) Not all will keep His commandments.
“And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:2-6).
