We have a system of government called
democracy. Democracy means 'rule by the people‘. It comes from the Greek words dêmos, which means people, and krátos which means rule or strength. This is because the idea of democracy developed in Greece in about 507BC.

Not everyone can rule…so we have elections
Not everyone can rule…so we have elections. Everyone over the age of 18 can vote for a minister of parliament (MP) to represent their views. Individual MP’s are usually linked to a political party. Can you name the three main political parties and their leaders?

What does it mean to be British?
You should know the National Anthem. You have a British passport. You eat English breakfast. You have a good sense of humour. You speak excellent English and can spell words properly. You can list four British sports. You would go and fight a war to defend your country. You feel proud when Britain wins a sporting event. You feel that Britain is best at many things. You like cheddar cheese. You dislike certain other countries but you don’t know why. You wear clothes that are British. You buy British products. You never use foreign words when you speak. You feel proud when you travel abroad. You like to eat roast dinners. You celebrate wildly on Saint George’s Day, Saint Andrew’s Day or Saint David’s Day. You also eat curries and takeaways. You read British newspapers. You know the four capital cities of Great Britain. You watch British films. You watch American movies. You know at least one other word in another of the languages spoken in Britain. You know lots about the Queen and her family. You enjoy staying at home during the holidays. You are interested in the history of your country. You react when you see the Union Jack.
