, born in Salinas, CA (setting for many books) Education- intelligent, well-read, attended Stanford U., no degree Success as writer in 1930’s with Pastures of Heaven and The Red Pony Grapes of Wrath, 1939, movie, 1939, Pulitzer Prize, 1940 Other books: East of Eden, The Pearl, Cannery Row, Of Mice and Men, Travels with Charley, Tortilla Flat, Wayward Bus, etc.

Was awarded Nobel Prize for Literature 1962 (for entire body of works) Partially in response to a literary critic’s objection to the award, he stopped writing fiction Was awarded the U.S. Medal of Freedom in 1964 Wrote twenty-two novels Wrote twelve non-fiction books

Southwestern states hit by severe drought experienced soil erosion culminating in Dust Bowls that covered the skies from Texas to SD to Wisconsin.
