Let’s take a closer look at “from The Jungle”. Pg. 352, lines 9-16, Author’s Choices – Summarize the image described in this passage. Analyze Sinclair’s diction, identifying the words or phrases that contribute to the strength of the image. Pg. 353, lines 37-60, Author’s Purpose – Cite examples of meat industry products that Sinclair describes in this passage. How do the choices of these topics serve Sinclair’s purpose? Pg. 354, lines 83-90, Author’s Choices – Is there anything in these lines that indicate whether Sinclair is writing fiction or non-fiction? What might be the advantages or disadvantages of writing a novel; where readers may presuming it to be fiction? Pg. 355, lines , Author’s Choices – Identify disturbing images with which Sinclair concludes the selection. Why might Sinclair have chosen to end the passage as he did? Take out your questions and partner up! Let’s see how well you do  Have students pair and take turns asking their questions. The answers need to be facing the questioner, not the answerer. Explain the Tip, Tip, Tell strategy. Circulate as students conduct the activity.
