Welcome Families Middle School Group Conference

2 What is a typical Middle School Day?
Core classes Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies 2 Electives every day (based on student interest survey) Fine arts, Foreign Language, Performing Arts, Health and Physical Education, Practical Arts, Visual Arts Lunch Extra Curricular Opportunities - sports, clubs, dances, volunteer opportunities Every day except Wednesday, students will have a period where they are grouped for reteaching, extension, or enrichment.

ELA Literature, vocabulary, grammar, and composition Math 6th Grade - Principles of Algebra 7th Grade - Pre-Algebra 8th Grade - Linear Algebra Social Studies 6th Grade - Ancient Civilizations 7th Grade - American History 1 8th Grade - American History 2 Science 6th Grade - Planet Systems, Cell Structure & Functions, Body Systems, Earth’s Atmosphere & Water, Energy 7th Grade - Earth, Plate Tectonics, Astronomy, Ecology, Classifications 8th Grade  - Forces and Motion, Ecology, Cells and Genetics, Chemistry, Physics

4 Placement Testing ELA - May 8 and 9 Math - May 11 and 12
In the past, placement test results have been shared with parents. These results show overall scores based on standards, and do not indicate class placement. Class placement information is shared at Meet the Teacher.

5 Advanced Placement Students can be placed in advanced ELA and/or advanced Math classes.  Next school year, middle school will begin implementing advanced social studies and science. Advanced placement is determined by using the following assessment data Math and ELA placement tests that are administered in 5th grade AzMERIT results Other relevant assessment data

6 Altadena Tour March 20th 9:00-11:00
Assembly in the gym-performances from band, orchestra, and choir Tour Rotation – led by 8th grade NJHS student followed by Q & A with administration regarding exploratory course offerings and Altadena expectations Lunch Parent meeting: March 20th at Altadena; time TBD

7 Important Dates March 3rd – End of 3rd Quarter 6th – 10th – Spring Break 13th – No School 17th – Fifth Grade Field Trip 20th – Student Altadena visit 20th – Parent Night – Altadena 28th – Music Recital – 6:00 April 7th – Movie Night 14th – No School AZ Merit Testing Week of 4/3 – Writing Week of 4/24 – ELA Week of 5/1 – Math May 5th – Gallery Night/Learning Celebration Week of 5/8 – Placement Testing Week of 5/15 – Human Growth & Development 22nd – Fifth Grade Celebration 9-11 (students and parent volunteers only) 23rd – Talent Show (student only event) 23rd – Promotion - 1:00 MPR 23rd - Last day of school – full day
