Exploring Computer Science
Unit 1 – Days 3-4
3
What is a computer? Output Processing Storage
A Computer is a programmable machine made of 4 main systems: Input Output Processing Storage Review – What is a machine? Write your answer here

Hardware Software Peripheral Device Input Device Output Device
Look up and fill in these vocabulary definitions. Hint: Some definitions may be on the slides that follow. Hardware Software Peripheral Device Input Device Output Device Processing Device Storage Device Memory RAM Memory ROM Memory Hardware – any part of the computer that you can see/touch Software – programs that run the computer Peripheral Device – something that plugs into the computer to extend its capacity Input Device – anything used to send data into the computer Output Device – anything used to display information that leaves the computer Processing Device – CPU/Chip – the brains of the computer – does all the computing Storage Device – Hard drive/cloud/peripherals – where data is stored when NOT being processed Memory – RAM/ROM – where Data is when it is being processed

BBKMGTPE Processing Speed --- measured in ---- Hertz
Add this chart to your vocabulary journal. Memorize! Processing Speed measured in ---- Hertz Storage capacity – measured in --- Bytes BIG BIT (0 OR 1) BULLY BYTE (8 BITS) KIDS KILOBYTE (1024 bytes) MIGHT MEGABYTE (1024 kbs) GET GIGABYTE (1024 mgs) TIRED TERABYTE (1024 gbs) PRETTY PETABYTE (1024 tbs) EASILY EXABYTE (1024 pbs)

Which System (Input/Output/Processing/Storage)
Use the slides that follow to fill in the other rows like the example Mouse Row. Look up any information that is missing from the slides! COMPLETE THE CHART. Component Which System (Input/Output/Processing/Storage) What it does Variations Available Processor Operating System Memory Hard Drive Optical Drive Modem Monitor Video Card Sound Card Speakers Keyboard Mouse Input System Sends page-specific location info into the computer Trackball, Wireless, Stylus, Cordless 3-D

The following slides give definitions you might need
The following slides give definitions you might need. You do not need to type on slides use them to find information for your assignments.
8
INPUT Devices Any device used to send information into the computer.
9
Keyboard An input device used to input symbols, letters, and numbers
Can be Peripheral or built-in
10
Mouse An input device used to show position
Wired or battery-operated; Optical or track-ball Built-in (Track-pad) or peripheral
11
Web Cam Input Device used to send video and audio into the computer
12
oUTPUT devices Any devices used to send information out of the computer.
13
Monitor An output device The display device used on desktop computers.
Peripheral or built-in
14
Video Card (also known as Graphics Card)
An expansion board that plugs into a personal computer to give it display capabilities.
15
Sound Card An expansion board that enables a computer to manipulate and output sounds. Sound cards are necessary for nearly all CD-ROMs and have become commonplace on modern personal computers
16
Speakers Hardware used to amplify sound on a computer
Peripheral and/or built in
17
Processing Systems The computer chip, CPU, or core; this does all of the computing.
18
Processor – THIS DOES THE COMPUTING
A single computer chip that contains all the electronic circuitry for performing a PC’s processing tasks. Also known as the Core, the Chip, the CPU (Central Processing Unit)
19
Operating System – NOT HARDWARE
Software that coordinates the resources and activities of a computer. Mac OS X Windows – has 95% of the market! Android OS’s
20
Modem Modulator-Demodulator
Translates Digital Signals to Analog (sound waves) and Analog to Digital External or internal
21
STORAGE Two Types of Storage: Storage Memory
22
Memory RAM and ROM Where data is held while it is being processed
RAM – Volatile/short-term ROM – Non-volatile and holds program instructions
23
STORAGE = Hard Drive (Hard Disc Drive)
The main storage device in a computer Where data/information is held when it is NOT being processed Can also buy External Hard Drives to increase storage Cloud Storage
24
Storage - Optical Drive
Uses lasers to read and write to a disc.
25
Storage - fLASH Drive Electronic and peripheral storage
26
Activity Choose 1 of the interviews/scenarios to use for the project
You will give the buyer 3 options of what to buy (make a chart) You will point out the advantages and disadvantages of each choice You will end with telling them what you think is their best buy, AND WHY Same groups as last time.

Scenarios Family 1 – Need a computer for a college student. Needs to take it to classes. It may get bumped and dropped. Wants a touch-screen and a wireless capability. Won’t do much gaming on this computer. Can spend around $500. Family 2 – Need a PC for a Christmas gift for Grandpa, who likes to his family, do family history, and buy and sell cars online in his spare time. It will stay in his home-office. The family wants to spend less than $500. Family 3 – This is a single person who is into programming and video gaming. He wants the computer to be Bluetooth-capable and top-of- the-line. He says he can only spend about $1000. Family 4 – This family wants a computer for their 3 elementary-aged students to use for homework and academic games. It will stay at a desk in their family room. They want to spend less than $500.

How to turn This in for a grade
Save this to your computer as we do in class Example: if your name is Alice Student, and you are in period 8, your file will be saved as 8StudentAliceUnit1Days3-4 Go to Password is “student” Add your file to the Dropbox Congratulations! You are done!
