3 Election of 1864 With the success that Sherman was having with his total war campaign on his “March to the Sea,” Lincoln used the momentum to get re-elected. His focus would be to bring the south back into the Union. His second focus would be to try and get Congress to end SLAVERY.

4 13th Amendment Lasting legacy of Lincoln is the fact that he used a law to end slavery forever. Huge struggle to get the votes in Congress, but it passed. With a victory almost at hand, with the fall of Richmond the focus moved to bring the Confederate States back into the union.

6 Andrew Johnson A southerner from Tennessee replaced Lincoln.
He had his own ideas about Reconstruction He didn’t agree with the Radical Republicans who dominated both Houses of Congress, thus they controlled Reconstruction

8 Rebuilding Brings Conflict
Southerners were afraid of the now 4 Million freed slaves and the interaction that would take place with them. Black Codes: Laws passed by Southern states that limited the freedom of former slaves

9 Carpetbaggers Northerners who went to the South after the war.
Investing and buying up things cheap in order to gain economic & political power. They had money and that’s what the south needed.

10 Freedman’s Bureau Organized by Lincoln
Built schools, reunited families, provided food and clothing for former slaves FBI= Freedman’s Bureau of Independence

11 Rise of the Ku Klux Klan Many Southerners were bitter.
They created a secret organization in 1866 to intimidate the freedmen. Encouraged racism, hatred and discrimination towards the former slaves. Used terrorism tactics.

12 Reconstruction Amendments
Declared all persons born in the U.S. (except N.A.) as citizens Johnson vetoed the bill Congress voted to repeal the veto Bill became law.

13 14th Amendment Citizenship to all African Americans
Equal protection under the law to all citizens President Johnson did not support it.

14 15th Amendment Guaranteed voting rights to African American men.

15 Johnson Impeached 1867: Tenure of Office Act
Pres. Could not fire gov. officials w/o Senate approval Johnson fired his Sec. of War anyway House of Reps. voted to impeach the President 3 days later Differed w/ Radical Rep. in Congress on how to reconstruct the South His plan of Restoration wasn’t enough and they wanted him out. He stayed but lost power.

16 Grant Takes Office In 1868 Grant became president with the support of the Radical Republicans He got 700,000 votes from the freed African Americans that rose above the intimidation of the KKK, to cast their vote... Reconstruction would slowly but surely rebuild the South for the next 10 years.
